high intensity discharge with ups
    #418310 - 05/15/10 12:17 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I've been wondering for some time if it's possible to use a HID lamp through a UPS.

Has anybody tried this? Is it safe?

The goal of using a ups is to enable myself to alternate my electricity usage pattern, so that if someday the local authorities start looking at it, I would not become a suspect to a victimless crime.

I know that the length of the cable connecting the ballast to the lamp should not exceed some length (one meter or half a meter, I don't remember exactly). This rule sounds illogical to me (as I'm not too good with high-school physics). So as I don't understand the science behind those lamps I wanted to be sure that it would be safe to use a HID lamp through a UPS.

i dont know for sure but im pretty sure i dont even need to check

im pretty sure the load would be too much
and even if it did work, it would only last for a short period of time

well, i mean the really really really big ones i guess would support it for a few minutes maybe

i dont know the specific info to tell you for sure but if you wanna figure it out

it should tell you a load, and use your physics and go rfom there

Well I'm not sure what a UPS is and didn't find much info on it at first google.  But dude, first off they can only look at your energy usage once a month and see how much you have used for that month.  And a 1000 watt light doesn't take up shit for energy.  So don't worry about you energy usage.  It's not going to alert the police.  DON"T WORRY ABOUT IT!!!!

Oh okay.  Just get a fucking generator if it comes to that.  And I only have that in case the power goes out...

1000W HID pulls 1000W/hr. Just put CFL in all your light sockets in your place, don't leave lights on, ect. You might just break even. Otherwise, you're being paranoid.

Everyone needs to read that thread. It's one of the best in the history of the growery IMO.  A couple posts down on that page Koons calculates someone's energy consumption for them.... using my current electricity costs out here I only pay $15 per month to run 2000W. That's so little it's basically negligible compared to my heating costs during the winter

Yea, people get busted in the air INFARED

Heat. Electricity is just evidence to help build a case..I'll run my powerbill as goddamn high as I want and I'll pay it. Its none of their business where its going.

Of course then they might fly a chopper over your home, but you don't have to worry about that until you're running 10000 watts of lighting with fans and all that other shit..And even then no worries.

I was paranoid, that's all.

The reason I was paranoid is because of those new electricity meters that are being installed here (eastern europe). They send data about usage through the mobile phone network and can also stop someone's electricity remotely and automatically if it's not paid (which is the reason they are being installed - there are minorities here that used to say "you stop our electricity on purpose - 'cause we're from the minorities". now this is done by a machine and they can't complain about discrimination). I have no idea about how much detailed is the usage information they send.

Anyway I only have one 250 watt hps, so I'm now feeling safer thanks to you
