My new toys

Well, I just got my ppm meter in the mail today and used both my new toys and all I can say is I don't know how I managed without them.
Definitely a must buy for everyone.
I paid a couple extra bucks more to make sure they had Automatic Temperature Compensation.
I know it probably doesn't matter much at room temp but I strive for accuracy and precision.
Best 42 bucks I've ever spent!

Hahah, I have the exact same meter's. The TDS works great, I haven't calibrated once.

Funny, exact same meters I've had too. Had to calibrate the PPM pen once, pH pen once, but I recommend checking the pH pen at least once every couple of weeks. When I calibrated it I was off by 1 which is a huge difference (and also explains why my current grow went to shit).

Hannah is the way to go man, they're more expensive but better quality. And you helped support a local business.

I don't know if I'd necessarily say Hanna was better quality. I use Hanna at work and the majority of them seem very jumpy.
After using both I would much rather use the 20 dollar Milwaukee than the 40 dollar Hannas.
Here's ones similar to the ones I have at work.
We first ordered 50 and 5 were basically junk straight out of the box. I'd say 30 of them give accurate readings.

I love my Hannah, easy to calibrate, don't have to fuck around with a screw driver to do it either.

I really think it's hit or miss with pH meters regardless the brand.
If you get a good one from the start it will stay good.
Either way, digi's are way better than drops. They are so easy to use.
There's no way anyone can say drops are more accurate than digi's also.
I've been an avid tropical fish keeper since I was pretty much born.
Always used drops and it really is easier to look at a digital readout than trying to determine a color.
Also working in a lab I realized there hundreds of different kinds of drops so color charts aren't interchangeable and are always different.
When making indicator solution its so exact that .001g difference in weight can completely throw off your reading.
I wont trust drops after having to make the stuff.

pH is just an incredibly hard thing to measure digitally. The whole thing with the porous glass bulb full of ionic liquid is just messy an inaccurate

I just hated using the drops at work so I made them get the digis.
When going for accuracy we always started with a universal pH indicator to narrow down the range.
Then we'd select a more specific solution.
I'm pretty positive 99% of the people here are only using a universal solution and in that case the digis are more accurate.
In all honesty though for marijuana cultivation you really don't need to be that accurate, so universal solution would work fine.
In certain situations at work though you need to be very very precise needing a more specialized indicator solution.
After going back and reading this post I realized I was pretty vague when talking about the solutions.
There's liquid indicators specialized for every range of pH. For example 1-2, or 6.5-7 if you want to be really precise.
So in the lab we'd use the universal to figure out that the pH was around 6, then we'd use another more specific indicator to narrow it down to 6.2
But once again, I'd rather calibrate a digi and use it.
I've completely changed my mind over the past few months.
In my early posts on the growery I was very animate about the use of drops and how they are the best.
But over time I've fallen in love with the digis to the point that I had to get one for home use.
I actually notice my plants are growing better now that I'm using my digi.
Of course everyone has their own way and I bet some people can do alot better than me just using drops.

To me the drops work to an extent if you don't care about being very accurate. It'll get you in the ballpark but that's about it.
But when you start getting deeper into cultivation and start using Liquid Karma or equivalents, or if your using Floranova the water gets so fucking dark and murky that it get impossible to distinguish the color of your water
Digital FTW.

yep, you nailed it with the dark water thing. I've got this humic acid extract that I use which literally turns the water black. 100% impossible to use pH drops with that stuff, it drives me crazy!

Yah, that's the reason I went to a digital meter. Flora nova stuff just destroys any chance at the drops, and the strips were getting to be expensive to buy.
I like the digital meter, but now I know to calibrate it a bit more often heh.
