Assisted Suicide
    #377257 - 03/02/10 06:49 PM (14 years, 20 days ago)

If I had to guess I would say that most of you reading this are all for this as it's on the same par of human rights as is the drug war.  There's a new Frontline on tonight (in about 2 hours) that discusses assisted suicide.  I think it's called Suicide Tourists.  I've been involved with this issue for a while now and have some firm positions on the issues.

What's everyone think about this issue?
Should assisted suicide be legal?
You may choose only one

nailed it. if someone doesn't want to live anymore because of extreme pain/ low quality of life, how the fuck can we justify forcing them? I can't think of anything more offensive than being forced into an existence you don't want

Gotta be some rules to it for me to be on board, metaly handicapped, underage etc etc. basically I don't care what you do as long as your actually capable of making an informed non emotional decision.

yeah, that's for sure.  I dont think there should be a standard for condition for people to pursue it though.  I don't know about you guys, but I don't want to have my brain turn to mush before i die.  Living with late stages of Alzheimer's is something no human should have to go through.  Or put their families through.

I'm all for assisted suicide provided that a.) the patient is a state such that he is not mentally incapacitated and unable to voice this wish on their own will b.) A legally binding document has been signed before they have reached the aforementioned state.

It's a sticky issue, but I take the golden rule approach when it comes to things like this.  What would I want to happen to me if I were in a situation like that?  I really wonder how many physicians are for this practice as well (as this directly violates the original hippocratic oath), I don't think I've read much on how they feel.

I did a big paper on this for a class a few years ago.

The response was overwhelmingly in favor, if I remember correctly.

Speaking of that, we all say this now but I wonder if the numbers change drastically when the people who say "no" actually come to that point in their lives.

I think assisted suicide should only be allowed if the assistant is a medical professional.

If your wish is to die, then you should be allowed to do it in a comfortable, private, clean and easy way. You should also be able to end your life, knowing that there is someone there that you can trust to take care of your remains afterwards. Jumping off a building or having a relative/close friend walk into your home to find your rotting corpse next to a bottle of pills is simply a very poor and pathetic way to die. It is sick, that people are forced to these measures.

Your are in control of your own body. If you do not wish to live, this is your own choice and it always will be. Whether it's illegal or not is irrelevant, people will still commit suicide - so why make it illegal to allow this to be done using medical professionals?

We have arrived at an age in time, where our bodies are now merely the vessels that transport our minds. We are no longer primal beings, where survival is hard coded into us. We have the intellectual capacity to chose our own existence. As I said, whether it's "legal" is completely irrelevant, people have this choice no matter what - however, many are sadly forced to carry out their task alone. It's not right.

I dont agree with suicide for depression reasons because it is such a burden on family and friends when the problem could have been solved so much easier than with a bullet or a razor blade

But there are definetly cases where if someone dosent want to be alive, has nothing to live for, or is in a medical state where they cant really do anything but beat their heart and breathe then I agree 100%

For some people there is just no way out. Haunting/unpleasant memories can be a life time of agony and torment. I can say for myself personally, I've done many things I'm not very happy about. Everyday I think about the bad things that have happened to me as well as my past failures and wrong-doings. Not because I chose to, but they just sort of pop up. I'm also incredibly cynical - I trust no one I meet ever, and I think everyone is lying to me. I can't help it and I can see how without some heavy fucking drugs keeping you afloat, some people cannot bear life.

It's a burden on family and friends yes. Regardless, there are multiple ways to do the same thing. Some are more burdening than others. If you gotta do what you gotta do then why not do it in a civilized way? Don't use a razor, don't use a bullet, don't jump or crash, hang or drown. If we are a civilized people, and we can chose our own existence then why can we not die in a civilized way? Talk to your lawyer, tell those who should know then go see your doctor when your ready. That is how suicide should be done. You should be able to end your own life, knowing all your loose ends have been tied.
