Lighting Q. Ya'll are probably over these already
    #365778 -

Ok so I am in a MAJOR debate inside of my head as to what to purchase for my first grow setup and grow EVER. I am somewhat of a noob but am retaining information off of this website very quickly and it seems to be coming together in my head smoothly.

Except when it comes to lighting.

My budget would only allow for me to purchase a 150w HPS lamp at most
http://www.hidhut.com/catalog/150-hps-sun-system-complete-kit-p-1427.html

But I was looking at these fluorescents
http://www.hidhut.com/catalog/fluorescent-grow-lights-c-23_99.html

And was thinking if I could just get like...I dont even know lets just say four of each (vegetative and flowering) would that be suitable until I could afford a HPS system?

Well there is a lot to go over.  A HPS is awesome and is ideal for flowering and does just as good of a job or better than fluoros during vegging.  Personally if it were up to me, I would save until you can afford a 250w or better yet 400wHPS.  You can get complete 400wHPS kits off ebay for 200$.  Good brands like Lumatek.  The fluoros you are looking at are Compact Fluorescents (CFL's).  They are great for vegging and will work for flowering if you really can't afford a HID (High Intensity Discharge) light.  However, you don't have to order these, you can find them at any department store.  For vegging you want a light with a light spectrum of 6500k, for flowering around 3000k.  I would do what you can with fluoros intil you can afford a larger HPS.  Always here to answer questions, don't be shy!:bigblunt:

Also I see this is your first ever grow.  In that case, you might as well start with fluoros.  They create less heat will keep things simple for your first time around.  Then once your ready to upgrade, you'll be able to notice the difference the HPS makes.

Yeah I'm probably going to opt for the fluoros since I don't have a lot of money to spend. I will DEFINITELY by able to upgrade to some nice lighting if this first grow goes well :]

Big ups to Kaptn also. He is helping me out big timez

Two 400 w HPS for $15.  Of course, this isn't an entire kit, but you might want to take it in to consideration.

WTF! Would I be able to rig these up without a super expensive fixture kit?

I bet its possible. Just rig up a makeshift reflector behind them or something I believe? And it should be able to work?

Also would need an efficient 400 w ballast.  I hear the digitals are the way to go.

you need a ballast to run one of those lights.  ^yeah digital ballasts are the way to go.  you can get a socket set for it but i think you'd still need a ballast to run the 400watters

Those are just bulbs.  You need a reflector, bulb, cordset, and ballast.  Digital ballasts are a much better choice than magnetic ballasts.

So I would end up spending a big wad of money getting all that stuff together huh?

Look on ebay for 400w hps.  There are plenty in the 100 - 250$ range.

100 is too much for my first grow budget. After I can get one grow finished I should be able to afford whatever I want and need after that.

i bought a 400w galaxy ballast (digital) on ebay for a bit over $100.  yes, its costly.  But it's an upfront cost that will pay for itself over and over again.  if you had that all you'd need is a reflector and a bulb.

Yeah man, I say start with a handful of CFLs or (if you've got the space) tube flouros while your new plants are vegging...

It will buy you at least a month, let you know how you're going to have to deal with ventilation, get to know your grow space, find out if you like the hobby etc.

Within a month I'd say you'll know if you've got the grow bug bad enough to shell out for a decent flowering system... cause if you do, you will.
