 How close is too close?

Hi there guys! This is my first post in the growery (I've been posting in the shroomery for quite a while though)....This is the most stupid question ever, and it's probably been asked, but I used the search engine and didn't find much....I just wanted to know how close is too close when it comes to lights and pot plants? a reference in inches would be very helpful.....
I'm using a 250 watt metal halide for one plant (sometimes I'll only grow one plant and sometimes I'll grow 3, 4, or 5 but never more than 5 because of space limitations and low wattage, I say this because maybe the distance changes when you have more than one plant? so I don't have to ask this again)...I will be using a 250 watt HPS for flowering....
This is my first time growing weed  thanks in advance for your help

Hold your hand under the light, if it's uncomfortably warm where you place your hand lower it until it becomes comfortable. Where that spot lies is minimum distance your plant tops should be from the light.
That being said, if you're using an aircooled hood or cool tube, you could probably keep your plant tops 6 inches to a foot away from your light source.

Thanks a lot for your answer!
I have a normal reflective hood only....isn't a foot a bit too far?
I guess I'll just do the hand thing, sounds like a great idea

I've run a 1000 watt light 1 ft from my plants. No air cooled hood but a fan running right on the light.
The closer the better as long as you do not burn the plant
What coda said is the best rule of thumb.
