Pump for ebb and flow system
    #332359 - 12/16/09 02:57 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

This might seem like a stupid question. But I've been reluctant to attempt a hydroponic grow because of the initial cost, with the more expensive nutes and the equipment.

I'm thinking I'll try the most basic hydro setup next grow, the ebb and flow. Is a proper hydro pump needed or does a fish tank pump do the job? Seeing as you need to control the amount of nute solution going into the medium. Thanks.

ebay.

maxijet 600 - $20
maxijet 900 if you want to be able to pump the stale water long distances for draining.

How important is washing the hydroton? And with ebb and flow is keeping the resevoir light tight to prevent algae growth important or does the constant circulation of water make that nul and void?

wash the hydroton between EVERY crop. DARK reservoir = no algae.

What about new hydroton? Does it need to be washed before first use? I guess it's possible there'd be chemicals on it from the factory.

although it is nearly impossible to get totally clean, you can rinse it to remove the dust/sediment that comes in the bag. they should definitely be washed before reusing to minimize the spread of pathogens. it's pretty much sterile though, I believe...the pellets are fired in a kiln. not chemically treated that I know of.

Any info on sizing pumps?

I use the maxijet 600 for a 12 pot system and another maxijet 600 for the res. The only trouble I ran into was that the 600 was not able to pump water UP very high which I NEEDED because it was in a basement and the water had to be drained out the window. The 900 took care of that.
