i mean pc's technically get the job done.. but so do tinfoil pipes

you just don't know what you're missing until you use one for a while it blows your mind

windows is ridiculously unnecessarily complicated and the greatest way to really describe a mac is that "it just works." you never realize how much of a hassle windows gives you until you try something else.

all of window's greatest advancements in vista and windows 7 that make people actually like it now have been standard features in mac for years that have been imitated. the entire concept of a desktop and 'windows' was ripped off from macintosh and they went to court over it years ago.

there's obviously a transition period. it's a different operating system.

it's a bit weird at first because you try and perform tasks the way you know to do it on windows and sometimes the striking simplicity of it all is dumbfounding.

but yeah i don't really feel like being a fanboy so i'll let it be and let people enlighten themselves.

All this mac talk is making me want to convert.

Just a couple weeks ago I had a blunder on my pc, and I have a pretty tricked out pc.  Out of nowhere I got an error and it would freeze 10 seconds after clicking on anything.  So I had to spend about 12 hours, at 10 second intervals, backing up all my files and then doing a factory reset.  pshh, pc

Re: Computer death [Re: Triptonic]
    #295983 - 10/12/09 03:18 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

long story short...

I live out in the boonies.  A farmer was harvesting his crop and accidentally rolled his tractor over a fox den killing the mother and two kits, the one in the picture survived.  Farmer and his wife didn't know what to do and I'm somewhat known as the animal rescuer around these parts, they sent him off to me.  I got him when he was just under two weeks old.  Raised him for six months (at six months they reach adulthood).  He needed full 24/7 care, rarely left the house for six months and didn't get a full night sleep for five months.

I kept him inside fearing he would run away if let outside and he wouldn't be able to survive without my help, but at six months I could tell he was getting antsy and wanted to explore the world on the other side of the window.  Tough tough decision, he was my baby, I decided to take him to a wildlife rehab center to this lady I really trust.  She spent another six months turning him back into a wild animal and finding him a mate.  He's now running free on a nature reserve and most likely has a family of his own.

it was a very hard six months to say the least haha. But I would do it again in a heartbeat.  When I decide to settle down someday I plan to raise a little fox family.

He's a gray fox.

A little fun fact*... gray's are the only ones with hooked claws which they use for climbing trees.  Just my luck as he would start at one side of the house, get a full speed running start and dart up the side of the wall trying to touch the ceiling.  I have probably 12-15 foot ceilings and he could get within a couple feet!  But damn those claws were like needles when he was just a baby..

Foxes have cool eyes, What did you name it?

Also I find that naming things sometimes makes it hard to give it away. Funny story my unlce had a 2 cows that he raised from babies that he was going to slaughter. He named them for some reason and then the day came to slaughter them and he couldnt do it. He ended up giving them away to some farmer who probably killed them himself.

aweee poor cows.  man I couldn't even kill a fly!  I have to catch 'em all and toss them outside to live on another day!

His name was Rusty.  I intended on keeping him but things just didn't work out like the original plans.  I had plans to spend the spring and summer traveling, couldn't take him with me cause I could have gotten arrested for even having him.  I had a deep connection with him and I could tell he just wanted to be free.

yeah I'd like to think I saved his life, hopefully he's doing well.

just for the record I don't condone ANYONE going out and buying a "domestic" fox, or wild, to keep as a pet.  they belong in the wild!  it's not like raising a cat or dog.

Well it turns out my credit isn't so hot.  I wasn't able to get the imac, yet.  I did get a netbook for the interim.  Its really small and will take some getting used to.  its got a 10 inch screen.  I was able to fuel my addiction by lurking around here on my phone for the last few days.  It seems like ive grown fairly attached to this here place.  :bigblunt:

ps - fuck the touch pad!!

Seeds > iMac

Seeds < PC(running linux) - you could probably still afford a fucking pc and buy seeds.

I bought this Acer aspire one on Thursday night.  27 hours later it had a serious problem.  First I couldn't get onto firefox so i deleted it.  Then i couldn't get on explorer.  It kept telling me the address http://(chinese characters here) could not be found.  I'd click ok and it'd close the explorer window then reopen it and the same message would pop up.  no matter what address i entered.  I ran a full virus scan and no threats were found.  Then I deleted zone alarm and simplite then deleted messenger live.  None of that helped so I just did a system restore and it's all back to the way i bought it.  man i hate this little thing.

  you guys are funny.  I got it at Target.  It seems to be ok now.  I just want to use the internet with it until i get a real computer.  when i got my dell in 2005 (the last computer i had that just died) my roommate hooked it up with his know-how.  but i dont remember what he did.  Then i had another buddy partition the drives and I really liked that set up.  I wish i was more saavy with these fucking machines.  i know where the porn and drugs are at though!

I got a new laptop about 2 years ago. Cost me $3500.

The same laptop but as a mac would have cost me over $6000.

They are ridiculously overpriced if you want a good one..

I tried using my bro's mac when I was computerless and nothing I installed ever worked right.

And what's the deal with having only 1 button... stupid macs. Yah, you can hold 2 fingers on the pad before you click and it acts like a second button but that's a pain.

I've used a PC my whole life and am never going to dumb myself down to use a mac. They are easy for a reason. So my 80 year old grandma can use it.

I will be the judge of that!  The mac im going to get is a 24 in imac w/ 1tb hd and i think 4gb ram.  its on their page.  the mighty mouse they have with it does have the normal right and left click buttons as i understand them.  Thanks for the offer mh but I don't think i am going to mod this one.  shit after i get a new comp i will probably only use this thing to watch movies on during airplane trips.

the comp i had before this one was a toshiba satellite.  I got it at circuit city.  I had a lot of problems with it too.  You guys may notice a trend here.

The thing with PC's is you can get them from any dive. If you want a good one find a good dealer.

Mines a Sager and is fast as fuck. 4 gigs of ram with quad 3.4 processors.

I wonder if mac even makes a laptop with 4 processors.

well it also depends on what you're goign to use it for.  I dont play video games or anything.  I mostly just use the internet and will fuck with photoshop too.  You don't need a 3500$ computer for that.  just one that works.

Woah, just took a few minutes to look at the new IMacs and wow, they are much cheaper than they used to be

27" LCD Aluminum Body
2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
1TB Serial ATA Drive
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB
8x double-layer SuperDrive
Apple Magic Mouse

Well worth $2000 Even when comparing to building your own PC with similar parts

Anyone think they will release a new imac today?  They announced their new tablet (the iPad).  The apple event is underway.  here's a live feed if anyone gives a fuck.

So it's like a cross between an iPod touch/iphone and a macbook?

I surprisingly still can't find much information on it other than a few pictures and a whole lotta nothin from that twitter feed.

lol yeah it popped up on the mac site shortly after I posted that. It's pretty interesting but they keep talking about how goddamned innovative it is and I don't really see the hype. From what I understand it's basically just a really big Ipod touch

the new A4 chip sounds pretty cool and the 10 hour/month standby is pretty awesome but.. I'm not so impressed. I'm a mac fanboy but I just don't get it. That being said, I'll prolly end up buying one once the 3rd gen or so comes out

check out this:

Quote:

Don't get me wrong, I'm as excited about a shiny new toy as any other warm-blooded geek. That said, no gadget is perfect, and there are a few things the iPad doesn't do that we really wish it did. In fact, without a lot of these things, the iPad isn't going to be able to take on netbooks like Apple wants it to — though it still may have a shot at ereaders.

Click continue and check out 7 things Apple left out of the iPad, and why it's making it that much harder for us to really fall in love with the device.

1. Multitasking
Right up front is one of our biggest gripes with the iPad: you can only use one app at a time. Want to fire up Pandora and run it in the background while you hammer out some text in iWorks? You can't. With all of these wonderful apps, why make us choose just one?

2. Flash Support
I'm all for the iPad's promise of being the best way to surf the web. The tablet lends itself well to that kind of casual experience, but without Flash support you just aren't really getting what today's web has to offer. If you wanted to head over to Hulu and watch a show, for instance, you wouldn't be able to.

3. Handwriting Recognition
A tablet such as the iPad absolutely screams for handwriting recognition, but, alas, Apple's touchscreen technology is still mired by the mindset that it's only good for finger-pecking. With some kind of write-to-text, we wouldn't be at the mercy of the clumsy virtual keyboard (more on that below).

4. Tethering
It's something that the iPad's ol' cousin, the iPhone, also suffers from, and we're sad to see it passed on to the iPad as well. Especially for people who live in cities such as New York City and San Fransisco, where the virtues of 3G are often questioned due to congestion. If the iPad had tethering available, it'd make the $500+ price of entry easier to swallow for those of us who don't want to pay a subscription fee.

(As pointed out in the comments below, tethering isn't a workaround when it comes to a subscription fee. What we mean is that with tethering, we'd have the kind of versatility we need when the primary means for a largely online-dominated device doesn't cut it. Tethering can in fact be more expensive, besides, if your plan doesn't allow it.)

5. Better Virtual Keyboard
If the iPad wants to be known as more than just a "giant iPod/iPhone," then it probably shouldn't have the same virtual keyboard as its predecessors. While the virtual keyboard works fine on the iPhone, the iPad's wideness makes typing with two hands feel clumsy and awkward, yet its size and the presence of iWorks makes it feel like something you want to type on. Sure, you could get an external keyboard, but at that point you may as well just get a cheaper netbook.

6. A Camera
The iPad's roomy, crisp screen is great for viewing photos, and Apple's really outdone itself improving pinch controls to help you navigate through your albums. That said, you won't be taking any new photos with this thing. Not only that, but the iPad would have been a great candidate for video conferencing as it has a mic. Still, no dice. No camera.

7. A Real Computer OS
A few of these problems — such as flash and multitasking — could have been avoided altogether just by having the iPad run a meatier processor, but it's stuck with iPhone OS 3.2, which keeps it locked into that family of devices. It did learn a few tricks the iPhone can't thanks to its bigger screen such as split-views and popovers, but it's going to take more than that to win us over to the iPad.

As a device, we're excited to see where the iPad will go. As it stands now, however, this is a first generation product and it certainly shows.

http://dvice.com/archives/2010/01/7-things-apple.php

All very valid points.
