The Death Penalty
    #478995 - 09/18/10 10:39 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

I'm curious what you guys and gals all think about the death penalty in America.  I was just watching CNN and they are talking about a case out of Conn.  Two men invade a home tie up the husband and two daughters, take the woman to the bank to get money and when they get back to the house they sexually assault the two oldest women and then kill them all except for the husband and try to burn the house down.  I am kind of torn on capital punishment.  One the one hand i have a lot of compassion and empathy for the family and if I placed myself in the surviving husbands position there's no doubt I would want the perpetrators to die horribly.  yet, state sponsored murder is an atrocity to modern civilization.  so what's everyone else think?
Do you support the death penalty?

I am all for it.  In fact, I think in a situation like that they should allow the husband to kill the perps if he wishes.  If not, then the state can do it.  It seems fair to me, however barbaric.

I don't even think it is that big of a deal anyways just some over media-ized topic.  How many people get killed each year from the death penalty?

Don't dish out what you can't take is what I say.

EDIT:

Oh wow 100 people a year.  Who cares?

all for the death penalty.. If i cant kill someone without getting into trouble then let the state do it. I do believe that how you commit the crime is how you die. For instance if you rape and kill someone then you should be raped and killed the same way. I'm cold hearted but i live in a state where there is the most deaths by the state. Good ol' Texas for ya

So if the father killed the guys that killed both his daughters and wife, should he face a death penalty charge as well?

I'm cool with the death penalty, but IMO there should be a requirement for even more proof to do it.

Because I never want to hear about a dude/dudette that was executed and then found innocent.

But people in jail for life with no parole usually do nothing but drain tax dollars.

Granted legalization of marijuana/cocaine/opiates would also empty those prisons out pretty good too. But then again D.A.R.E. ran a pretty good campaign of misinformation.

Also, I beleive if you have to kill someone it should be as quick and painless as possible.

I have mixed feelings. I recently read a book Edison and the electric chair and I have contemplating my feelings on the subject of capital punishment a lot recently. I feel the same way Edison did at one point, that if someone hasn't exhausted their ability to be put to some use that they shouldn't be put to death. In the case stated in the original post I think those people should probably die. In a case where someone can only contribute labor not generating a profit over the cost of incarceration I think that person should die too, as he or she would be a burden to tax payers. I think such rationalization is basically to say anyone serving life should be put to death.

If its red-handed - kill 'em.

If theres ANY question - life in prison.

I can sit here and say anti-capital punishment stuff all day long...but when it comes down to it, if someone did something like that to my family, I would want them dead. If the state wasn't going to do it, I would hope every day someone in prison killed them.

Of course it's happening inside your head.

I don't see how isolating people behind bars who will never become productive or rejoin the civilized half of their society is more humane than killing them. Besides that it costs millions of dollars for life long prison stays.

To be honest, Solitary confinement for the rest of their life might be worse than death, if they don't make the death as painful as what they did to the victims (trying to kill the man with fire). Which is why I say kill them with fire. People in solitary confinement sometimes try to kill themselves, because that's how bad it is.

If there's any reasonable doubt, I believe those people go free.

Unless you mean, video surveillance or a crowd of people has to witness/record the murder for the accused to be put to death.

Good point. I think life in prison would be much worse (depending on the conditions) than being executed.

I dont believe in capital punishment simply because there is never any way to be 100% certain no matter how much video surveillance, witnesses, etc. I remember seeing an estimate of how many people who have been put to death in the US were innocent, and it was terrible. IMO killing one innocent man is much, much worse than letting 1000 guilty men live to rot in prison.

As being a person who only partially believes there is an afterlife. I'd personally like to keep my body alive as long as possible. Though if a person want to die who has life in prison though, and they can be called mentally fit. I think they should be assisted with their wishes.

They do the exact opposite, they start keeping eyes on them more to make them stay alive miserable.

I don't believe in the slowness of the system. I think that once they find guilt in cases of multiple rapes, murders, etc. then they should just take them to a pre dug grave, say grace or whatever, and shoot them in the head and bury them. All of this waste of resources for societal tumors is beyond my comprehension.

that's a good point too.  Not to mention the kind of psychological issues that go along with being on death row but not having a date for it set at all.

Anyone ever read the book The Stranger by Albert Camus? A good part of the book (which is short) explores the state of mind of someone waiting for their death date/on death row. Fairly disturbing if you ask me.

The fear of reflection when on death row to discourage people from actions that would merit the death penalty? Fear this more than death sort of deal?

In the book I recently read, Edison and the electric chair.. There's some reasoning as to why the electric chair was more humane than hanging and why death row was thought to be necessary.

-The electric chair vs hanging would apparently be more terrifying than hanging as you would be killed by a silent, unknown force, and go without struggle. Some would think of this to be worse than death.

-Death row, as stated above would allow criminals time to reflect their actions, feel guilty, feel like they should have another chance at life, but only to be killed without mercy. Could this be worse than death?

You're probably right. The idea going into it was, to make this way of dying so hopeless and inevitable that no one would want to suffer it. Keeping it humane and horrendous was the goal.

Keeping the death away from the public eye seemed to be a good deterrent for those who wanted to be famous or go out with a bang but now we have more murder suicide cases or shooting spree suicide cases.
