sad seedlings

my seedlings are hurting, it seems... their leaves have very deep ridges, i think the veins are yellowing, the tips of the leaves are starting to burn and they are curling inward pretty heavily. i have some shitty pics i took with my phone, i hope they help.

from what i can gather, they are suffering from a nutrient deficiency. they are planted in miracle grow mix that has some peat and verm or something. it is a continuous feed for 3 month mix. but, its like 3 years old. i used it 2 years ago with some success.

also, i have well water with a pH between 7.8 and 8. i just tested this with a pool tester that only reads from 6.8 up to 8 and is kind of old. i think this may be the cause of the deficiencies.

what i have done is watered them with pH 6.8 adjusted water (1tsp lemon juice per 1/2 gallon) with 1/2 recommended concentration (1/8 tsp per 1/2 gallon) 20-20-20 ferts.

could this be caused by too much light?

i hope i didn't fuck this up. i guess we'll see.

you over ferted them, you fed your plants with something that has a ratio of 20-20-20??

Seedlings need no nutes in the first few weeks of their lives, at least not until the first set of true leaves start coming in. There's a chance they could survive, but i dunno, that's a pretty damn heavy fertilizer. I'd consider flushing them out with some plain water, but, that may cause them even more stress then they're already going through.

they developed the symptoms before i fed them and i only fed them once, just now. they have been growing for 14 days, i think. i'll let you know how they respond to the ferts.

honestly, i have 1000's of seeds so it won't be a huge issue if these die on me, maybe i should germinate some more just in case  :shrug:

Yes, but you planted them in a soil mix with continuous fertilizer feed, so I'm sure that could be a problem. Also there shouldn't be any direct light on them.

for one, you used miracle grow soil. and your water is way to acidic. get some ph down and bring it to a 6.5, that will help with the future nute lock out problems. that bottom pick looks like youre using cfls, so its not the light. you prbly just burned em a little. switch to fresh ph adjusted water untill theyve got like 4 sets of leaves, and then transplant and start your ferts.

high pH = alkaline (basic)
low pH = acidic

bringing the pH down means making it more acidic

but yes, 8 is too high, closer to 6.5 is preferred

UPDATE

they are doing OK, a couple are pretty wrinkled, a couple are a little burned, but they are all going to pull through.

BUT!!! i had a power outage last night at 6:30 and it was out until 3:30, thats 9hrs. what should i do for the light cycle? should i continue at 15/9? or will they be ok if i keep it at 24/0? perhaps 18/6 would be good to keep them in veg? it would seem 15/9 would force them to flower, but would one dark period be enough? an answer before 6:30 today would be just grand :tongue:

and to clarify: i have about 250w of cfl's on there (custom diy lighting array), but there is no reflector atm so efficiency isn't very high, but it seems they are getting enough light right now. also, i have been watering with tap water with 2tsp lemon juice per 1 gallon to bring the pH down around 6.8, would vinegar be better to use? apple cider or distilled?

i have more shitty cell phone pics :laugh:









the one in the center is doing the best/most symmetrical and with no burns :smile:

I don't think its going to induce flowering, but it wouldn't make sense to leave it on 15/9. I'd recommend putting it on 24/0 for the rest of the vegetative growth state.
