    #227350 - 05/17/09 11:22 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

So this is my first time growing a plant and im pretty rusty on the technique. Ive got a plant that ive been growing since the day after 420 its doing pretty good. but when should i change the lights over, right now its got a 150 watt indoor grow light that i got from rural king.

Ive got a journal, check it out and tell me what you think plz?

how much space (in inches/feet) do you have between your light and grow medium (soil/etc...).....

well if you have 1 foot total to work with....your light needs to be 6-8 inches away unless you have good ventilation then you could put it about 4 inches away......so that only leaves like 4-8 inches of growth room whch is pretty much impossible to get a harvest unless you flower them as soon as their rooted and even then your electric bill will be multiple times the $$ worth of your harvest so you'd be losing money.... so i suggest going and rolling a fat one...smoke it... and try to figure out how to get more height in your setup!....

Why do i need more height out of my setup. my plant is 3 inches tall and has about 12 leaves on it already. Check out my journal. Ive got plenty of pics on there.

?i did read the journal and i just explained why in my last post? 1 foot is not much especially when including light radius....your plant is short, bushy and looks good, but it will most likely elongate more too (depending on the strain)....so there wont be many internodes for buds to grow if its only gonna be 6 or so inches....im just saying around another 6 inches to a 1 foot would be perfect and more worth the work if you know what i mean........it doesnt seem to hard to get a little more height in there.....(add another tote or something)

ic ic. i was going to add another tote when the plant reached the top of the planter, but as you can see it just doesnt seem to want to get any taller. Your saying i should lower the light to about 4-6 inches away?

yeah add the tote.....and keep the light like around 6 inches from the plant because the closer you have the light to the plant the more "Lumens" the plant can absorb from the light....but dont put it closer than 4 inches because then heat is a problem and your plant will start to burn......with a 150 watt HID you could put it at a minimum of 4 inches away (only if you have good ventilation)....and i wouldnt put it any further away than 8 inches because then your losing light power.... thats way 6 inches would be a good medium with no risk of heat stress or loss of light power!

im nervous to lower the light anymore cause of what happened to the other plant, the plant that died was right under the ballast of the light, the good plant is under the bulb. ill work on ventilation and see if i can improve that a little bit first.

Also how much longer should i keep this light on the plant? My friend told me that it was a good light for vegging but not for budding.

what kind of light do you have a Metal Halide/ or High Pressure Sodium?....and you said that the plant was under the ballast? so are you saying that the ballast is connected to the reflector???...if so then the heat was most likely the death of your one plant because a ballast can get pretty hot....(i have a 1000watt and i cant even touch mine).....

(yeah do that first)
and always remember the earlier you flower the smaller your plant will be at harvest....but always leave room for it because it grows even during flowering just not as much and as fast.......once you get the other tote up measure it then come back and say how much height you have then it would be easier to determine when to flower so you can take advantage of all the space you can....

then what burned up the other plant, it kept growing but it never got much bigger those pics were all taken at the same time both plants were the same age, and the leaves would get long and burn up at the ends. I just figured it was because it was at the base of the light where all the heat was coming from.

the one pic in your journal that you said "i pulled the lil' guy"....the plant looks a little nutrient deficient which would cause slowed growth but beside that it still looked very much alive!

yeah it was very alive but not up to par lol he had to be let go.

Heres the mix thats in the soil.

has a small layer of dirt, then vermiculite, then a 2 inch layer of dirt with a layer of Osmocote slow release plant food for vegetable and bedding. then there is a large layer of soil mixed with a small amount of food.

i was high, seemed like the right thing to do??? lol

I'll let you in on a secret...its never to early. the rule of thumb is at about 12 inches they are tall enough and hopefully strong enough to hold significant weight of the flowers (buds) they will produce. You can wait longer for bigger yields or switch sooner as not to wait as long but lose some yield weight. The guideline that determines when to switch, it that generaly plants when switched to 12/12 will double to triple their height (depending on strain and genes), so determine somewhere about 1/3 to 1/2 the grow space height and plan accordingly... Hope this helps a bit....
