My box says for cleaning the outside of the ear or ear excluding ear canals.
I'm seriously scared of putting those things in my ears I once forced back a bunch of ear wax up against my ear drum and got an infection and now I'm paranoid of doing so.

Not really. If you use them in the ear canal they can cause impacted ear wax.
