That's a good one for the price as much as I hate Best Buy. I'm not the one to help you but what anyone who will needs to know is exactly what you want to do with it. Most important if you are a big gamer. If you want one that excels at particular games and will for a foreseeable length of time then that info will be important in decision making for example.
If you consider this a big expenditure for you then don't rush it. Do some research and get all of the non biased opinions and tips you can absorb.
I just bought two laptops for my kids this Christmas. That hurt my wallet. They are not getting gaming computers though. They are already hooked up console wise and they are going to have to be happy with that for a while.

most of them are bundle packs. come with just the basics, the computer, headphones, and user manual. that's about it
I personally love my HP, I havent had a single problem with it since getting a replacement
the only thing I have got extra is a mouse and mousepad since i hate using the built-in one and I got a 500GB external harddrive that way I can keep my files backed up and free up more space on the actual notebook drive

True to a point. Anyone really serious about their computers for gaming or other will always have something more versatile, upgradeable and, expandable than a laptop. There are however, some pretty hard core laptops out these days that will handle most gamers needs depending what they are of course.
This is an example of why I said to get plenty of opinions.

there is no such thing is a computer that will still be good in 5 years.
buy a medium-high end range where the budget is signifigantly lower for competitive products. than upgrade every 8-12 months.

I have to have a mouse because I play a lot of online games and a touchpad would be worthless. I use it when i go places but at my desk I love using my mouse. Plus the mousepad is more comfortable

I don't know about 5 years for any computer but, the one you are looking out sounds great for what you said you are going to do with it. You have room in your price range even to go up or down in screen size to suit you. For example, I have one with a 17" screen that I love for watching video and shit but I don't have to carry it around a lot. If I did I would use my 14" a lot more.

OK I can see that. I'm not a gamer at all. I remember when I first used a pad vs a mouse. I found it awkward and doubt I ever would have tried to adjust to games with it. Now I don't even think about it at all though. It's like an extension of my own finger tip.

yeah, formatting.
but you have to spend the time to find out who makes your video card, network card, sound chipset and anything else windows might not pick up on it's own.
it's actually pretty easy and if you want i'd be happy to walk ya through it.
i do it to every computer I buy (assuming I dont build).
final advice: stay away from compaq, read internet reviews of models your looking at and there is no reason to break more than $700 to get what you want.

I've got an HP. I just bought Acers for my kids. I've had about every kind you can think of probably. Gateways are user friendly ime.
I buy most of my computers and related from Tiger Direct but your choice will depend on the level of customer service you expect vs price. I expect absolutely none, buyer beware, get what you pay for you hope at best. lol

I've heard a lot of good about them but never tried em out yet. I've been doing business with Tiger Direct for many years and now they have two retail stores near me too. About the only thing I can say for them is you get what pay for but at least you never pay too much for it.

Im not sure if you guys remember but I had computer problems with my original HP for a year, just minor problems but it was getting annoying. I called HP and bitched them out until they sent me a brand new laptop right to my specifications for no charge to me at all, and sent me an extra battery for it
now that's what I call customer service
