 First-time CFL closet grow: Big Bang and SSH *Completed*

I've been meaning to make one of these journal threads for a while now but never got around to it.
This is my first grow and I'm as excited as a kid at christmas. The grow room is a small closet with one 1x125w 2700K Envirolite CFL bulb and 2x32w 6400K bulbs. It is housing a Big Bang plant and a Super Silver Haze, feminized seeds from Green House. The soil is a mixture of mushroom compost and ordinary potting soil. There were not a lot of soil to choose from at my supply store. The temperature ranges from 26-31°c, relative humidity is around 40-50% but recently it has gotten as high as 65%.

There was a small accident with the SSH as I misjudged how moist the soil was and didn't water but the damage was minimal. During vegetation I added fertilizer with every other watering. The fertilizer is called "Schultz All Purpose Plant Food" and has 24-8-16 NPK rating. No nutrition related problems have occurred.

Today is the 4th day of 12/12 after vegging for 3 weeks, and my Big Bang stretched so much last night she almost grew in to the CFL bulb. The other plant, a peculiar Super Silver Haze has not been stretching as much, contrary to what I expected. Maybe the SSH is not much of a sativa as I thought or perhaps the fact that it has two main colas has something to do with it?

I've been keeping pruning to a minimum this growth, only removing some small tiny grow on the first internode that was receiving almost no light.

I have a question that will answer itself in a few weeks if no-one here does: Where do the buds form?
Also, I haven't spotted any preflowers. I'm not worried about getting males since the seeds were feminized, but shouldn't they be very visible by now?
*EDIT*: Actually I spotted some hair on the Big Bang.

I don't know if you have starter flowering, but once you switch to 12-12 it will take another couple of weeks before you start seeing buds take form.

I'm moving in to an apartment soon because I have to move so the house I rent I'm kinda out of now...Anyway, I have been wondering how I can grow with my MH/HPS in an apartment, and didn't want to use CFL but...After seeing these results and a few others they do damn good. Glad to know that...Keep us updated.

But I didn't really have a choice when I bought my bulbs. If you're getting multiple bulbs, make sure to have a mixed spectrum so there's some daylight as well as warmer sunlight rays.

I just hope they'll stop stretching soon.
The leaves on the SSH look kind of funny to me. This picture is taken right after I watered them this morning. Does it look like over- or underwatering to you?

Great looking grow snufkin!
You have only been in flower for 2 weeks give or take, you have at least two more weeks of stretch. I hope you can find room for the growth.
Cfls make for some lanky growth some times but they produce some pretty nice bud, especially when the plants look as well tended as yours. I wouldn't worry too much about the over/under-watering, the leaves don't look bad at all. I had to go on vacation and when I returned one of my plants was fully wilted, leaves were dangling; I gave her some water and she perked back up to good as new in 12 hours. Just give the pots a lift, if they feel empty, give them water, if not wait until they feel light.

Well...Think is I'm going to use 3 100+ watt bulbs with reflector. So I'm not real worried too much about stretch...But obviously will have some compared to my mh/hps. I just want to try it in my apartment I am being forced in to out of my house for a year or two while the economy tries to recover...So my main problem is heat.

Thanks for the positive comments! Since I'm not doing much these days besides eating cake with my family I've been a little trigger happy with the camera. I hope you don't mind the frequent updates.
A couple of days ago a thread by t0ad prompted me to check the pH level in my soil. It was around 7, 7.1 possibly in one of the pots so I decided to add a little bit of bloodorange juice to the water (is this a bad idea? doesn't seem to have hurt my plants). I got it down to around 6.5-6.8. Today I decided to flush for the first time because I didn't like the colour of the water that sipped out of the pot when I watered. I believe both of these actions have made the plants healthier, especially the SSH. The leaves are straighter and the yellow/discolouring of the leaves where the leaf meets the stem has gone.

Or maybe I'm just imagining things? :> This is the SSH plant and she has almost no hairs yet despite two weeks of 12/12, and those few I can find are very small compared to the star of the week, the Big Bang:

02.01.08 3 weeks of flowering.
Some of the first leafs on the Big Bang that are not getting much light have started turning yellow and are falling off.
   
But the buds are looking good  That plant is so big now that viewed top-down it's shaped like a square.
The SSH still isn't forming buds:
  
Just a few hairs here and there. Is this abnormal considering it's been three weeks of 12/12 or should I just stop worrying?

looks sweet dude, i wouldn't worry about the haze, don't they generally take a longer time to flower anyway? and the fact that ur using cfl is probably affecting it as well.
i'm on week 3 of flowering my 3 northern lights plants as well under fluorescent tubes, let's see who finishes first 
had a haze plant going too, but it turned out to be male

The SSH has decided to stretch some more despite 3 and a half weeks of 12/12 light regime and if she won't get her shit together the shit will hit the fan soon. Literally.
Is there anything I can do to get her to stretch less and start flowering faster? I'd hate to have to cut her highest branches now.

dont cut, bend!
You can train your plant.... take some speaker wire, or threading / yarn & slowly bend the plant down, a little more every other day. I have one of mine bent over, it eventually bends back up but I have room for it to grow again now and more light is hitting the middle of the plant where there are more bud spots
i love how the plant @ beginning of flowering when the top begins the massive white pistils; it realld does look like a flower!

Looks like they have a long way to go to me. I'm starting to think the waiting is the hardest part about growing your first plants.
Big Bang:
I don't know what to say. The buds are getting bigger but slowly. This strain seems to be able to take any kind of mistake a newb can throw at it. I'm wondering if it's normal for the bid leafs to be so much darker than the rest of the plant?
    
This damage you see in the last picture is because there's not enough room for all the leaves and some are bent up against the walls.

I grow with soil...Hydroponics is too tedius for my school/work schedule I don't have the time to monitor very closely...Close enough though for what I do.
I don't water on a schedule like you would in hydro I water on an as needed basis. According to the moistness of the soil...It's the best way to keep from over watering/burning them with nutes n what have you.

Eh, its not a good idea but you can if you must. At 4 weeks until harvest you won't get very high though. As your plant gets older it will get more potent and gain in bulk. So its really up to you, a little bit of weak weed now or more great weed in a month.

Those plants look good I'm not sure what the spots are but as long is its a contained incident I wouldn't worry a bout it too much...Keep an eye on it obviously.
And yes those plants look like they should...They are really showing their dominance as far as indica or sativa...I like the big bang I may end up trying it in the coming months.
I don't know if you know much about topping plants...Etc...But once you get this grow behind you look in to that for sativa plants. It will force them outwards instead of up so much since you have limited height...Only problem is the limited width as well, but you can always cut them back if need be. I would try to find strains that are short and stocky like the big bang for that area...Just my opinion.

I see the CFLs on the side, but the larger metal fixture holds, what? the larger style CFLs? Sorry, I don't know my lighting that well. Love the grow log!

It's a 125W "Warm 2700K" CFL in a reflector. The other smaller bulbs are very white 6500K bulbs so the plants are getting a very mixed spectrum of light.

The Big Bang will receive its last dose of nutrients with the next watering, then I'll flush and harvest in the second week of february.

On the big bang the stems for some of the fan leaves have started to turn red and the water consumption is way down. If I were to judge ripeness from the pistils I'd cut it down now but green house says 8 to 9 weeks.
  
This has been happening a lot to the super silver haze. The lowest leafs are receiving no light and just curl up and fall off.
The branches higher up are looking good however:

Breaking news: My fan just fell down on the Big Bang, knocking two branches off (edit: the branches were from the 1st and 3rd internode, the smallest buds really). Thank god it missed the main cola! What impact does this have on the final harvest (other than the two missing branches i'm drying right now)? Will maturity be stunted so I will have to harvest later, or will the potency be lowered?

 I don't think it will have any serious effect on the rest of the plant. No need to change your plan.

This grow is heading towards great success imo. The wait has been long but harvest is just around the corner now, I think I'll give the Big Bang a week more, making flowering 8 and a half weeks.
The branches that broke off when the fan fell down yielded about 3 grams (huge error margin). Counting the remaining branches this plant will easily yield over an ounce. Some of the premature harvest I dried quickly and smoked (the high is really relaxing and stony), the other buds I'm drying slowly to see if I can do it properly. The "green" smell is still present after 4 days of drying (is this normal)? I was hoping the dried bud would smell like the bud/resin on the plant. It's kind of stinky, but in a good way. I have nothing to compare it to.
  
The Super Silver Haze is really catching up and today as I was tending the plants my hand rubbed up against the buds and it smells amazing! Really, beats all perfumes. And there is a plus to having a giant plant that would be taller than me if it wasn't tied down => more buds!

Looks great! Yeah, that ssh is maybe a step ahead of mine now. I can't wait to see that ssh in full flower.

Any ideas what this is? It has been showing up on some of the bud leaves. Most leaves are OK, but it seems to be spreading

That is a basic table it obviously is by no means the for sure answer...But in this case I would have to agree. Have you been using ferts? If so what does the box look like in terms of nutes? I've used a miracle grow for roses for a problem like this. This isn't serious but the plants aren't just turning red they are becoming more and more pale I've noticed.

Hey snufkin.
That picture looks to me like a manganese deficiency, can't tell for sure though with just one pic, could we get a couple more? Have you fertilized recently? Most importantly, have you checked your Ph? I suspect it could be a Ph problem.

Appreciate the help guys!
I've been watering with a 17-19-29 fertilizer (0.05% manganese, 0.05% zinc, 0.50% magnesium, 0.05% copper, 0.10% iron). I measured the pH to be exactly 7.0. It could be that I have been rather aggressive with the fertilizer, I will flush the pot and see what happens.
    
This is appearing mostly on bud leaves, sometimes as little spots all over the leaf but mostly edges, sometimes in one large cluster. The color of the spot is gray/orange/brown. The spot is very brittle, if I try to bend it it breaks easily.

Myth busted.
Anyways the problem with the haze still persists. Here are two images, one showing the leaf situation:
 
I've flushed and watered without fertilized since I noticed this but is seems to continue to progress.

Wow, that big bang looks great! The trichs in the second picture all look crystal clear. I can't provide any insight into the ssh problem. but i can wish you luck through this issue.

So this grow came to an abrupt end when I discovered some bugs riding along the water that came out of the drainage holes on the SSH. They were small and white and looked like larvae to me. I decided to immediately flush with a lot of water and hope I get all of that, whatever it was. In the closet she was tied with some string for support but when I took her out of the closet the buds had become too heavy for her and the stilks both snapped right in front of my eyes - FFFFUCK!
Lesson learned: be careful with huge plants.
So I spent the next hours manicuring the very immature buds and putting them to dry. I took one small-ish bud and put it on the oven for fast drying. That evening I cut up that bud, grinded it along with a bit of the proven Big Bang and mixed it with tobacco for a spliff (I was worried it wouldn't burn well) and took a walk around the neighbourhood as I smoked it.
Thank god I made it back again before it all started. I sat down with my laptop and realized that I was high as fuck. And I was getting nauseous. Every time I moved my head I was reminded how nauseous I felt. I put some music on and tried sitting by the window for some fresh air. After a couple of minutes I thought the nausea was gone so I stood up to change song but when I did I puked all over the floor. However, the rest of that evening was great.
Lesson learned: go slowly with new weed, don't smoke too much.
The Big Bang yielded 1.2 ounces. I had put the Big Bang buds in bags and jarred them. Today I was opening the jar and inspecting them for some reason when I noticed that the huge main cola bud was starting to degrade. It smelled like a piece of bread that had been sitting in the table a bit too long . There was probably a lot of moisture left inside the bud since it was much larger than the other ones. I put it on the oven to dry it some more and mixed it with the cuttings that I'm going to use to make cannabutter.
Lesson learned: dry it properly.
This grow was far from perfect, but I've learned a lot and I will use it for the next grow: Lemon Skunk and Hawaiian Snow.

bummer man. SOunds like some potent weed. Too bad about the bugs and mold. Good luck growing out the skunk and snow strains!

Snufkin, that may be the saddest story I've ever heard. Waaaay to many lessons learned in too short a time. I hope what you do have left is good to you brother. I had a great time following this thread. I look forward to seeing some more from you quite soon!

Great grow man! Unfortunate that you had so many incidents, but I'm sure you'll learn and your next grow will be that much better. You've inspired me to start up my own closet grow once I have better funding

Let your buds hang dry for at least 4-5 days next time. Even if they look dry they still might be wet on the inside.
