Hard Frost Coming up
    #133424 - 10/17/08 01:27 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

I have an outdoor grow that is so very close to finishing... I just want to give my plants about another week until harvest.  Problem is, we have a hard freeze coming up over the weekend.  Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 20's for a few hours over night.  My question is, will this kill my plants or destroy the bud?

I guess it's alright if it kills the plants - I'm willing to risk that - because I'm going to hack them down soon anyways, but I just don't want the bud to get messed up.

Anybody with experience with growing outdoors through a frost?

I'd cover build a blockade around them to avoid lots of cold wind, because wind gusts tend to be the coldest ting anyway.  As long as there isnt a lot of moisture on the buds right now it might be ok, i'd worry about the next day once it warms up above freezing the moisture sitting on the bud from the freeze, could attract bud mold

i've let my plants sit through light frosts, but this is only a couple degrees below freezing.  mid 20s is much lower, and would probably be significant.  the problem is that if the water in the leaves themselves freezes, you will basically be left with wilted mush when it thaws.

did the frost come through over the weekend?  what happened?

Sorry about taking so long to get back to everyone.  Yes, the frost came through and hit the area pretty good.  We had another one hit the night after, too.  I got tied up last weekend, so I wasn't able to check out the plants until yesterday, but all was well.

Almost all of the leaves (except for ones right on the buds) were brown.  The plants were still standing and the buds were looking nice, though.  I wanted to let those plants go a little longer to get more of a stone type high, but they were just taking too damn long to finish.  That was already the end of 9 weeks flowering for Blueberry.  The seedbank said 8 weeks flowering.  Most trichomes were cloudy, but I wanted to see more amber ones.  There is still a non-negligable amount of clear trichomes on the one plant.  Do you think that's okay, or will that mess up the smoke?

Oh well, I figured it was better just to take them now instead of risking them getting destroyed or found.  Anyways, let this be a lesson to all who are interested that marijuana is a pretty hardy plant.  Mine survived a hard frost with no problems.  I will note, though, that these last two months have seen very dry weather.  Perhaps higher humidity would have invited mold.

Glad to hear they made it ok. I personally like 50/50 clear/cloudy in my indicas. I find they are naturally stony, amber makes it too strong for my taste. Sativas on the other hand I like to let go a bit longer, say 70/30 cloudy/amber. Anyway, enjoy your harvest!  :burnone:
