if they're frozen or refridgerated many many years.

decade old seeds will usually have a 50-70% germination rate.

I've had 15-25 yr old seeds germinate before.(around 50%? dunno)

seeds get ruined from their inner moisture evaporating and rotting the outer part of the seed

room temperature isnt suggested at all.

the 15-25 yr old seeds were stored in a mason jar at room temperature stored in a basement, I think that room was more like a wine cellar though.

also if you freeze seeds, you need to plant them after thawed you cant continue to refridgerate or refreeze them

and they should probably be dried (as i assume store bought seeds are) before freezing them....  i usually keep a silica pack or some rice in my seed bags to help keep things dry when storing.

If you're not planning on using them for years, the best thing for you to do is to get something like those camera film containers, and put the seeds into it with an equal amount of slowly dried rice, or the right amount of silica gel. Essentially, you need to keep the humidity at about 5%. Throwing it in the fridge will help slow down the chemical processes inside the seed. Later on, I'll start digging for some much more detailed information on the matter.

i guess....but if there is too much moisture in the seed, its gonna freeze, and if that doesn't directly kill it i would think the thawing would (cant be good for the cell tissue).  cured weed still has some moisture doesn't it?  i would think too much for freezing seeds.  any thoughts?

keep them between 2-5C and in less than 5% humidity. you should prevent water and air from reaching them as well (use vacuum packaging and silica gel).

cured weed likely has 5-10% moisture content

seeds even less... especially on the surface

dry, cure, freeze = good for many many years

i know i am dumb...but what is the point of curing seeds, that is just drying slowly for better bud taste/trichs.  seeds just need to be dried. moist seeds in the freezer will die, almost every time.

that would be the best way :smile:i do mine as best i can like this (hundreds of species, but not weed), and they last many, many years.  very dry, some kind of material to absorb moisture, sealed jar in cool dark place.  after 12 years i have many seed stored like this (in ziplocks in room temps).

put your seeds in a food dehydrator and see how viable they are then.

im not positive if curing seeds is manditory as I'm sure you could just dry them but it's common practice amongst many breeders and growers. I've heard it several times notibly by chimera, rezdog, and the urban grower.

Seeds need to dry for about 3 weeks after coming out of the bud. Simple as this, they don't dry they don't germ.

Store them in a air tight container with some gel to keep the moisture down and store in the fridge. You should get 5 years without much of a lowering in germ rates.

I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion on freezing seeds? I've heard freezing seeds is super effective as long as you use when thawed.

it has been stated above....thats how seed banks do it (real seed banks)....seeds must be dried before freezing, or they will die.

all you've said is wet seeds being frozen die.

this is common knowledge for any person who has watched sci-fi in the last 30 years.

I mean how long can frozen seeds be stored, ect ect. pros and cons.

I've heard frozen seeds can be stored nearly indefinately as long as you dont plan to store them after thawing.

there are 3 types of seeds that are grouped together by storage properties.

orthodox
these can be dried to low moisture % and stored for a long time.  NO seed can be stored indefinitely, but 10-20+ years should be no problem i think.  i am pretty sure pot seeds are orthodox seeds.

recalcitrant
tehse seeds die if dried too much (moisture is too low)....mango seeds are like this...you dry a mango and it wont grow.

intermediate
as the name sounds, its kind of in between.  usually they dont take freezing, but may be ok if dried a certain amount and stored in the fridge...totally depends on sp.

bascially with orthodox seeds, the drier and colder the better...but some people say that too dry will harm these seeds as well.  i really doubt anyone here will eb able to get them that dry anyway, so i would jsut dry them as much as you possibly can and pop them in teh freezer.

some big seed banks are storing seeds at -100C or colder, and people say seeds can last for hundreds of years this way.

tehre is a formula as well that i totally forget....something like lower temps by a degree and it can be stored for another 3, lower the moisture by a % and you gain another 4 or 5.....if your interested, i am sure google will have the equations and science as to why.....

anyway....the drier and colder your pot seeds are the better...mkay?
