Soil recipe question
    #122103 - 09/14/08 04:29 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

SOme of the literature I've been reading lists soil ingredients (like worm castings or peat, or potting soil) by volume but most of the places that sell that kind of stuff stateside do it by weight.
Any guesses as to the conversion between gallons/liters of soil to lbs/kg?
Also, what is the difference between sphagmum peat and black peat? One of the recipes I looked at lists a large volume of "black peat" is this interchangable? A google search reveals nothing.

i'm not sure about the conversion rates between weight and volume.

i think black might be a synonym for hypnum. sphagnum is 75% fiber and has a really acidic pH (3-5). hypnum is darker and less fibrous with a higher pH (5-7).

Thanks salty,
I know there's no true conversion between weight and volume, I'm just looking for estimates before I have to go fill up a milk jug with dirt and see how much it weighs...
