Nature’s Living Soil Smell - ideas?
    #859972 - 03/08/23 08:06 PM (1 year, 20 days ago)

Just moved my peat pods into AC fabric pots with nature’s living soil super concentrate mixed with ocean forest. If you’ve used it before, you know it literally smells like shit. I’m growing indoors until mid April. Any tricks to neutralize the smell? Charcoal on top? Thank you!

I'd probably just throw a decent carbon filter in the tent, assuming it's in a tent.  If not, think "negative pressure system".

Just ordered one on Amazon. I’m just growing in my office until moving the plants outside late April. Is there a tent you recommend for inside? I have five seedlings going now, transplanted into 1 gallon containers. Basically working in a 2’ x 1’ space.

That's a pretty small space, tents are typically 2x2 and bigger.  You could build a small grow box with pvc and plastic, or even just use a cardboard box for a temporary enclosure.  Just remember to keep the extraction fan on at all times once you get them enclosed.

I mean I have 2x2 and could get one but this is really just meant to be until mid April when I’m going to move them outside. Just want to grow them well until then. This is my current setup. Could definitely use a cardboard box or something to contain the light some. And again the smell from this crazy soil. Must be good stuff but smells like the inside of a horse’s ass lol

Probably because it's been there , lots of organic fertilizers contain composted manures.  I'd see if you can find a box to fit over it, and then cut a ventilation hole in the top for your carbon filter and fan, and some smaller intakes near the bottom.

1000% lmao 🤣 I used the box the light came in to at least make a shade. It helps quite a bit with directing the light. The carbon filter arrived today. Just need to find a big box. Thinking the boxes for hanging clothes in storage. What should the lux be for seedlings? I’ve read 4,000 and between 5,000-7,000 both on royal seed. It’s around 5,000 now.

You don't need intense light for the early seedling stages, but it also won't hurt them. I usually just shoot for 15-20 watts of LED per square foot of canopy and call it good for veg.  If they look like they're stretching, lower the light a bit or turn up the wattage if you can.

I have this one light. It’s a Secret Jardin 26W TLED bar. Read about it in various places. The seedlings were stretching before without it. I repotted the jiffy pots into the new 1 gallon fabric pots so they are back to normal. So all good, just want to make sure I have the height right for the light. I have the lux reader, which is why I was asking about that. They look okay 🤷

I've never owned a lux meter, most growers prefer the PAR meters that measure ppfd, but they are a bit more expensive.

Since it's only 26 watts and a strip light, I'd say keep it around the 12"-18" range. You could probably get as close as 6 inches without issue.

The main problem with having the light too far away is that when you put them outside into the full sun, the leaves will be fried because they are not used to intense light.  The plants still usually survive, but it sets them back a bit.

Thanks man. Since I already have this lux meter I’ll use it for a ballpark reading. At the moment the bar is exactly 18” away. I’ll lower it incrementally and see how they respond. At some point they should “meet,” then I’ll raise it according to growth. Sound about right?

I’m seeing a bit of yellowing. What’s this about?

Could be something wrong with the soil, adding a super soil concentrate to a soil that many already consider "hot" could be causing a nutrient toxicity.

Chances are though, it's probably not a big issue.  See if they get better or worse with time and go from there.

Yeah I thought that might be the case. I did weigh it out properly and mixed properly, so hopefully all good. Doesn’t look bad but just trying to stay on top of everything early to set a good foundation. The cotyledons on two are curled under a bit, which I think was from giving them too much water in the peat tray. I kept thinking it was evaporating from the empty cells but the pods were absorbing it 🤦♂️ that’s why I transplanted early, because they were too wet and also stretching. But I think they’re okay. I poked my finger in there a minute ago and it feels like the peat ball is still damp.

Just fyi I lowered the light considerably and the plants sprung to life 🌱

Hey any thoughts on this plant? Seems to have stunted growth? Yellowish bottom leaves? Ph or nutes from the concentrate? They’re getting the right light. Far right is growing well, middle okay, and left totally stalled. Thanks!

First thing that comes to mind is that you don't seem to have anything under the pots.  Get some saucers or a tray under there or they will ruin your floor.

Now back to the plants, it might be your soil ph, nutrient concentrations, or even watering habits.

It could also be a runt, sometimes you just lose the genetic lottery.  But I'm betting it has something to do with that super soil mix.
