Plant growth experiment * 1
    #847117 - 01/01/21 10:23 AM (3 years, 2 months ago)

I had an idea for an experiment to try on one of my plants while reading about photosynthesis; how sunlight is used to break apart H2O freeing up electrons to be used in other chemical reactions. To me this process sounded a lot like electrolysis, and I wondered if this process was done externally and the plant was fed with a stream of extra electrons how it might affect the plants growth.

So, I found a couple of cheap solar panels i had laying around, wired them together then to two electrodes that were placed in the soil either side of the plant.

8.66v read directly from the solar panels on an overcast day

0.76v was read in the soil (One wire on an electrode, the other directly in the soil roughly 3 hand spans away)

I will continue to update with photos but so far I have seen a significant increase in growth in only a day or two.

interesting. it would be great to see loads of tests done by multiple people.
i cant do any relevant testing myself at the moment, but i will definitely do some experiments if the opportunity presents itself.

i am not very experienced with weed cultivation and have not even finished a fully successful crop yet, so i have no mental reference for the growth speed.
i am assuming by the confident image reply that they are growing very fast?

you might be about to change the growing game

Interesting and different. Hope you can get some valuable info with this experiment.

Be wary though of the possibility of unforseen byproduct production with that electrolytic cell you have now, amongst the precious roots. I can see it being not impossible to produce strongly alkaline or acidic byproducts that end up dissolving in the moisture present, throwing pH off big time and possibly reaching caustic/corrosive levels.

But electrochemistry has never been too interesting for me, since I'm lazy and tend to stick to simple classic "chemical + chemical" reactions; so I could just unknowingly be fearmongering. :moron:

At this point I'm ready to conclude that the experiment had "No noticeable effect" on plant growth. I will continue to observe bud development throughout the flowering stage, however I predict there will be "Nothing out of the ordinary" to report.

I'd like to see a side by side comparing automated irrigation to hand watering.  I've heard great things about high frequency fertigation in drain to waste coco systems, and I've also heard that plants in organic soil grow faster and with larger leaves when irrigated with either blumats or a "SWICK" style bottom watering system.

I was pretty close to setting up a 150 gallon fabric bed on a SWICK system in a kiddie pool, but I never ended up getting around to it.  It seems this system would eliminate a lot of the problems people can have with larger beds, such as uneven watering and hydrophobic dry spots.
