Should you pasteurize vermiculite
    #833935 - 08/09/18 01:15 AM (12 days, 7 hours ago)

Before using a vermiculite and perlite mix to clone, should i pasteurize my verm? Its being stored in an unsealed bag in the gatage and it gets very hot and humid here. Ive had the bag for over year now and im scared its not clean enough for cloning
Does anyone regularly pasteurize thier cloning mediums?

Vermiculite is a type of mineral and hasn't any food for molds but if you want to be sure there are couple of options.

You can add a fungicide or buy rooting powder with a fungicide in it.

Vermiculite should not be pasteurized but you can sterilize it in your oven.

Quote:

The proper time and temperature for dry heat sterilization is 160 °C (320 °F) for 2 hours or 170 °C (340 °F) for 1 hour or in the case of High Velocity Hot Air sterilisers 190°C (375°F) for 6 to 12 minutes. Instruments should be dry before sterilization since water will interfere with the process.

Note if your vermiculite is wet you will have to dry it first this can also be done in the oven. Once dry its 350 for two hours.
