If my tester says 8.6 but the solution is about 6.5 with the ph test solution
can I just get my water to read 8.6 and then be o.k?
I think i threw out the plastic dials that calibrate it or there never were any
(My plant lost a few leaves on the bottom lol)

From my expereance lossing low or bottom leaves is from your pH being to high.
I use pH drops. A lot less of a PIA than those meters. IMO.
You realy need yo get your pH down.

Whats your setup?
I use a calibrated pen
Your ph is always gonna be high and need to come down. You can just buy "ph down" to adjust and if you go too low, add water to raise...
8.6 is too high.
You'll get to a point where you know how much down to add when youre making up your water and then just test every once in a while or so.
My city water is around 8.5 and I use 1.5 capfuls of ph down per 6 gallons

I've used these for years and I do ok growing.
 
Give em a try
Then take that ph pen and smash it. Then light it on fire, and take it far out to sea and dump it cause that's what those pieces of shit are good for.

 I use the meter but if I think its funny I check it with the ol drops! A must have to grow.

the last thing i did was put in some hydro solution
I may have put it in too close to the base and maybe that's why that happened
I have a garden in the backyard though and that shit grows fine with tap water, just throwing that out there...

If your pH does not stay stable in your tap water for 2 or 3 days you have bad tap water.
Thats what happened to me. Now I use R/O water and the pH stays stable for 3 to 4 days.

Oh mag... my pens ok. paid 80 bucks for the fuckin thing. im definitey using it...
Like I said. waters always the same here anyway. I always use the same mix. plants are kickin ass
