your tips and tricks for harvest time
    #755958 - 11/04/14 09:23 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

I'm gettin closer to harvest, and I'm trying to think of anything and everything I can do to possibly increase yield and or quality. I got some photosynthesis plus today and more hesi super vit since I ran out of the super vit a few weeks ago. I'm thinking the photosynthesis plus could benefit the plants some. And I started using the humboldts honey carbs along with a little molasses, and a litle liquid karma. What's your guys tips or tricks, or special touches you put on to give a little boost. I'm also wondering about adding some co2 which I shouldve done awhile ago but kept forgetting. My partner wants to use tanks but I think we should just keep it simple amd throw in a dozen colonized grain bags.lmao. What do u guys think? Everything is looking great but I'm always looking to perfect it on my free time

Koolbloom, or any pk supplement week will do.  Enough fresh air exchange negates any need for co2

Adequate ventilation helps a lot, but it's nothing like running additional co2.

Excessive air exchanges will dehydrate plants, so it's hard to have rapid air exchanges and not be stressing out your plants. I used to use a 600cfm can fan on a 210 cubic ft garden with a 250 intake, I did the same thing but ditched the 600cfm fan and just ran the 250 as my exhaust with passive intake and my yields went up. I didn't think dehydration would be an issue as I was running hydro feeding up to 5x a day but my yields went up by around 10% due to less stressed plants. A perfect environment with even 500 ppm co2 is going to out perform a room with "optimal air exchanges". Running co2 however doesn't mean you're going to improve your garden, everything has to be dialed in.

I'd really like to know if people leave their leaves on while drying or even at some midpoint during hanging. I'd also like to know how people dry and cure their stuff

What goes wrong in the drying/curing process that gives a lot of bud that infamous, "hay" smell? And how do you prevent it?

The main cause is drying them to fast. Harvesting the plants to early can cause it also although that is more of a wet grass smell and taste from the chlorophyll.

"I'd really like to know if people leave their leaves on while drying or even at some midpoint during hanging. I'd also like to know how people dry and cure their stuff"

I remove the fan leaves by the time the plant comes down, I hang my plants on coat hangers or to line dry. When the branches are snapping rather than bending I put them into paper bags for a week then into jars for the final cure. If I just want to sell the stuff clones line/hanger then into cardboard boxes with plastic bags.

Some people will leave the fan leaves on until they're ready to smoke, claiming this is the way to smoke as you're protecting the trichomes from the elements and even from being handled too much and breaking off. I'm sure they're right to some extent, but seriously/

As for the hay/wet grass smell, some genetics just taste like this, it's notorious in some sativas especially in haze and there's no way to get around it if it's bred into the plant. TomHill who bred the "ultimate pure haze" actually selected away from this phenotype to get the less undesirable plants in the population.

Otherwise Magash hit the nail on the head, you want a nice and slow cure to gradually bring the moisture in the buds down. This allows the chlorophyll to break down a slow drying process is also going to preserve the structure of the bud, if you dry them quickly you'll end up with weak and crumbly buds that bud too fast and too harsh.
