How come 24 hour ight is no longer recommended?
    #743478 - 08/10/14 01:41 AM (9 years, 7 months ago)

I grew a long time ago under lights and we used 24 hour light.  Now they say to use 22 at the most with a two hour dark period.  I searched for this and couldn't find anything concrete so i thought I'd ask the question.

I assume you're talking about autoflowers.
Maybe because any light over 22 hours is useless for the plant kind of like how any light over "x" for vegging plants is useless.
If you're talking about photosensitive plants, 22 hours is not ideal lighting. 18/6 is for photosensitive veg

There is still a lot of debate on that question. This is what a trusted grower from marijuana passion told me.

Quote:

That is one of the common misconceptions about cannabis. Some plants need a dark period and some plants don't. Like Sunakard mentioned, cannabis is one that doesn't need a dark period--there is no benefit to a dark period when in veg. Running 18/6 encourages the plant to stretch (looking for light) during the dark period, 24/7 light and the plant will grow--develop new internodes rather than stretch.

Even Ed Rosenthal  recommends  24 hr lighting.

In High Times they are recommending at least two hours of dark per day.  I never had any problem with 24 hour light.

These days you're probably better off doing the exact opposite of anything High Times recommends...

I'd ask High Times but they probably wouldn't answer me back.

I mean these plants have been in our planets day night cycle for so long that they must have developed at least some processes that take place in the dark veg cycle. Unless the dark does nothing but delay the plants normal processes...  I really don't know. I just think if 12 hours of dark starts the flowering process, then the dark in general is having an important effect on the plant. Even if the plants were to grow larger faster in 24 hours of light, is it at a cost? maybe the final product will be missing some of the 400 or so normal compounds they create or something else that's not at all obvious. I'd like to see some obsessive comparisons that covers everything including long term detailed smoke test comparisons.

For sure your plants won't die with a normal vegetation period using 24 hours of light, but  I personally will be going with the more nature like option and giving plants a dark period. When in doubt look to nature. I guess.

Meh. I run 24/0 with no problems. Mainly because I'm too cheap to buy a second timer and fuck it, cfl is cheap to replace when they burn out.

Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

Yeah, not to mention the savings on your electric bill...that's the main reason I give mine 6 hours of darkness.

Well...
In botany, they say all plants need a dark period.  Many argue that 24hr light is not ideal.
Most growers I've metg run 18/6 veg. it saves power.

I run 24 and I seem to notice more growth and faster re-grow from pruning. (Pruning addict)
Its low wattage t5s and standard flouros tho but you'd have to weigh in costs as well for higher wattage lighting use.

The other thing I like about 24 hr light is the reluctance to form hairs early on older clones as well as the ability to mess with my plants at anytime day or night.
I've seen no apparent damage/stresses/herm action from 24 hr veg that I can observe.

This is true, while Marijuana doesn't need a dark cycle to survive, they do have different gas exchange properties that happen during the dark cycle.
