How to fix root bound roots
    #729315 - 05/03/14 07:39 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

Apparently when this happens in potted plants the root ball gets so thick it stops absorbing water or become hydrophobic and sheds water.

Found an article with a great tip to fix this. Basically it just says to dunk the root bound root ball in a bucket with water or plant tea(for beneficial microbes) for several minutes, which should penetrate the root ball and loosen the roots. I'd be gentle if you have to pull the roots away from the root ball. This tip was for planting outside, but I don't see why you couldn't just transplant to a larger pot. Sounds simple and almost obvious but I hadn't seen this tip before.

Check the link for the article.

Ive had a couple plants start to suffer from getting root bound and all I did was transplant into bigger pots and within 2 days they flourished. They weren't anywhere near that bad though.

Soak it, and then rake the sides with a knife or trowel etc.  The damage you create to the roots by doing so will allow it to throw new roots out into whatever you transplant it in.  And yes, you can just transplant into a new larger container.
