So I was told....
    #728594 - 04/30/14 04:30 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

That I need to get a hobby... by my therapist

I was thinking about either learning a computer language like C++ or maybe even downloading Rosetta Stone and learning a language that could come in useful somewhere later in life

What are some other ideas for potentially useful hobbies?... that are legal... and dont take a substantial financial investment

Reading, fishing, biking, and hiking are not hobbies, they are activities. There is a substantial difference.

It really does depend on what you find interesting, Pickz, but I've had great fun with gardening, brewing (I even turned that one into a career) and learning and instrument. Some hobbies like music or a second language are double good because they're useful in the job hunt.

How is fishing not a hobby?

Saltwater fish tanks...

Learning a lang is a skill. Learning pc shit would be a skill. Now building pcs could be a hobby.

I like the instrument idea too...

I am going to read about brewing, this seems like a hobby I could really enjoy however I am sure my therapist will not approve

I would be all for doing a Salt Water Tank but it just takes too much money for me right now.. I need something that is cheap and potentially helpful as well

When your therpie said hobby I don't think he meant alcohol...

Nigga, I'm poor.

Tank and stand - 100.00

Sand and live rock - depends on the size of tank. The smaller the cheaper. Its usually a pound per gallon and 3 inch live sand bed. Rock in my area is about 3.00/ lb.

Filteration - 30.00 - 100.00 (depends on how you're starting off.

Lights - you can go really cheap, but better the quality, the better the coral. My lights were cheap as fuck so I can only get soft coral. Still cool.

Fish - depends. There's a lot of cheap starting off fish.

400.00 and I could help you find a decent setup. You can also make serious money from selling frags. (Coral pieces...)

Yeah, I am not spending 400$ on anything right now.. That is almost an entire months rent and I am only working 25 hours a week currently.. Salt Water Tank just isnt in the cards right now

Im liking the Brewing idea... I think it would be fun to learn and have some sort of reward to it...

Might also look into what it requires to take certain computer certifications and maybe start teaching myself some of those things..

Being a convicted felon means that I am going to have to do some things on my own time to make myself a more desirable employee and becoming certified in computer stuff and/or learning a 2nd language seems like it might be worthwhile

I am going to do stuff like fishing too but that is an activity not a hobby

Those arnt hobbies... Learning can be tough... A hobby is something that will pre occupy those idle hands. Stress plus idle hands means drug use.

Brewing might be cool, but it won't keep your mind and hands busy.

You need to find something that interests you and keeps you busy.

Idle hands is the devils playground...

Brewing won't keep your mind and hands busy? You've clearly never brewed. You could read 8 hours a day for 6 months and not even touch the tip of the iceberg for brewing knowledge, plus a brew day is a solid 6-8 hours plus monitoring progress for the next 4 weeks until you drink it.

Yeah, I am leaning towards this

How much would you say it costs to get started?

Honestly that just depends on how serious you want to get. We could get you up and rolling for about $100-$150 but the more you spend the more you get. Don't fuck around with extract brewing though, you'll want to use real grain so you actually have something to learn. Look into a brew method called "BIAB" or brew in a bag. That way you still need to read about malt varieties and mash rest temps etc.

However, if you read about all grain brewing and it sounds like something you'd like to tackle, I will send you my old false bottom for a 10-gallon igloo mash tun. Cost me about $65 but it's yours for free if you're serious about getting your shit together. You can do it

:crazy2:

Also - antiquing. It sounds gay but fuck me I love waking up on Friday and Saturday going to garage sales and shit. Watch American Pickers and see if it gets you pumped up. You can sink a lot of hours in and make mad bank if you know what it is you're doing.

And then you can send me all the Nintendo and PS1 games you find while you do it...because I need some homies helping me out. People are catching on and my collection isn't growing anymore :C
