Loco801's Grow
    #725294 - 04/09/14 11:03 PM (9 years, 11 months ago)

This is my second attempt at growing. This time I have much more knowledge and some trusty friends to help me with advice. So far I've germinated the seed in a wet towel and planted it. It's about 2 1/2 weeks old including germination time.

Here's pictures so far. Far right is most recent.

I'm just going by the pics but it looks like you're using used soil that has no perlite for drainage.

I used coco coir from a hydro store. You can't tell, but theres perlite in there. Most near around the root structure which is most important from what I read. Still a seedling so I'm careful on how much water I give it. When dry, I can easily dig around the soil without effort.

New set of leaves emerging.

Bump, any advice is appreciated. Two first leaves have turned a bit yellow so I cut those off. I also added a small layer of more coco coir to the top since it seems to have compacted a bit.

Plant doing well.
This is in day 20 since breaking the soil.

I would advise just letting leaves fall off on their own, or if they succumb to being lightly brushed with your finger.  The cotyledons are going to wither eventually anyway but you may as well let the plant suck the rest of the nutrients from them first.  I'm about 2 weeks into flowering on my first grow and I have a quart jar full of fucking dead leaves.  Granted some of it is from small male plants, but, yeah, it worsens the issue if you remove them prematurely, and it can cause the growth to be stunted.

If you're like me and you hate seeing the dead parts, you can use scissors to trim only what's already brown and crispy, leave any yellow or green on the plant still.

Yeah I was doing it to all of them and my  6 week old plants barely looked like 3 week old plants, with how many leaves were lost.  Sad stuff.

Sooo... my second to bottom leaves are also turning yellow-ish from the outside in now. What does this mean? This time ill let them wilt without cutting them but i'd like to know why this is happening or if it's normal?

Probably not too big a deal. I had one plant start rapidly turning pale green and completely crisped up on me, leaving me with no fan leaves, not sure why but it survived into flowering. so even if there is a problem I'd say just don't over fertilize, and make sure there are micronutrients in your fertilizer. Someone else could probably help you a lot more, but they'd probably need more info. I'd personally just do nothing and hope it works out =P

To me it seems extremely hard to pinpoint what's wrong with a plant based on symptoms. I'm sure experience makes it a lot easier, but when I look at plant problem guides, I start thinking I have several different deficiencies that I probably don't, and never figure out what is wrong.

If you think you over fertilized there's always the option to flush it and re fert in a small amount.

I was thinking nitrogen deficiency. My friend has some sea kelp he's gonna let me have but he says I need to transplant.

Edit: I've used no nutrients in the past. Just went and. Got Alaska fish fertilizer and mixed as it said on the bottle. Is it ok to just spray on the soil in a spray bottle?

I've also decided I'm going to transplant into a bigger pot and I'm going to add more perlite for drainage with the coco coir. I also need an incubator to raise the humidity. (Has been around 50 for humidity)

Yea you could probably spray it in. I sometimes end up watering with a spray bottle, but mostly because I'm being lazy. You might need to use more than just fish fertilizer possibly, although I know you can use just bat guano. I'd just worry that it's not covering enough P and K since Alaska is 5-1-1 I think.

I'd personally just transplant to improve drainage. I'm sure theres still a bunch of room for roots.

You shouldn't need better humidity this late in the seedlings life, and even with sprouts you can usually get away with not boosting humidity. I could be wrong.

With coco coir you're going to really want to just get some hydro nutrients and give them food every watering. You can use organic food like the alaska, but it's less than ideal in coco.

So here we are around day 33 or so. Problem ended up being that it needed a transplant. Since I started the seed in a bigger pot. The roots started all wacky. I found others who had the same problem when searching. Started a bit more fertilizer and noticed roots running out of the bottom so I transplanted once again but don't have a picture yet.

Here's a couple days ago.

That is certainly not what the problem was, but I'm glad it's doing better.

So I have a deficiency in something. I've been using cal mag and some epsom salt in water. Also got some compost tea.
