Sprout stem-root rot?
    #716085 - 02/18/14 06:02 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hello,

I sprouted my first-ever plants a week or two ago. I had them in two locations, some in this room with big windows, a couple in my toad terrarium. They germinated and grew with amazing rate (noticeable changes hourly), and at about 5-6cm (2 inches or so) it seems the stems would wither from the roots and they would of course die. What's happening?

To note:
Room: Day/night light, 10-15 degrees C, watered in small amounts daily, used garden soil with perlite

Terrarium: constant lamp light, 25c, constantly moist, in cheapest most basic garden dirt without any additives

Both sets were planted in locations after germination occurred.
Both sets are from the same parent plant.
I saw no obvious signs of mold.

You are over watering.  You need to allow the soil to dry out in between watering.

The good thing about growing marijuana is that it's a weed. There are obviously optimal conditions but the one thing like hawk said that people do when they first start out is over water. Once you get used to growing and seeing what your plants needs like nutrients, water etc you can tune your method but being your first time the best advice I can give is stick your finger down in the soil/growing medium and if it is dry 2-3 inches down then water.

Start picking up your pots when they are wet and you will notice a change in the weight as it dries out, I pretty much go on that, just keep a mental note. Right now you shouldn't need to water but every 1-2 weeks depending on your pot size.

Too much water is the worst thing you can do to a plant, if their roots stay constantly wet they rot. Of course when you start feeding them that is another thing you have to watch for, less is more for a new grower in my opinion.

Just try to get the plants to flower your first time through and the next time will be better and so on. Keep reading and learning it gets better.

I see I see.

There is new sprout in the terrarium (which a mentioned has constantly moist soil) which seems to be growing well. Should I remove it to a place I can give it drier conditions?

My main fear is letting it get too dry, then they die rapidly before I can do anything as they're so delicate.

It's not going to die overnight from being too dry.  That will take time.  You can leave it in the terrarium.  Just stop watering it.

I can't let it dry out because of the toads. However I could set a pot inside the tank, which I will do with the latest seed I germinated. Thanks, guys!

You misunderstand.  Let the soil dry.  Stop watering.

Well no, I can water the terrarium but not the (flower) pot.

This seems like a pretty serious conflict of interest.  Not sure if the toad terrarium thing is going to work out like that.  Would be neat, no doubt, but those conditions...
