My DIY RDWC system. 10 site undercurrent-style system for less than $300!
    #715436 - 02/15/14 10:13 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

5 Tuff Boxes $10 ea ($50)
11 5-gallon buckets $3 ea ($33)
14 1" barbed nipple bulkheads $2.75 ea ($38.50)
10 8" Net pot bucket lids $1.50 ($15)
10' black poly tube 1" $1.75/ft ($17.50)
1800 GPH magnetic drive pump $129 on amazon
If I did my math right, that comes out to $284 before tax.

Now, most people hand-feed their clones for the first week they're in here, till the roots come out of the net pots and go down into the water. Myself, I already have the top-feed system set up, so I'm just gonna put two drip lines in each plant site for the first week or two.

I still need to get a couple of 1" elbow fittings so I can bring the ends in together like they should be. The hydro shop in town didn't have any in stock (no one in town uses that size but me, evidently). They only had 4' of 1" tubing, too! I had to find the other 6' at a pond shop that's shutting down and just happened to have a little bit left in stock! Lol.

We shall see! I'm going to go get clones to put in her tomorrow! A friend of mine who is doing an I-502 grow is hooking me up with a couple dozen clones to keep me going for the next two rounds...

Dude you should explain some of the assembly and operation of that beast. The pics are cool but don't explain a whole lot... it would be a great guide to have for people looking to break into hydroponics.

Well, the system is based off the recirculating deep-water culture system made by Current Culture called the Undercurrent. It uses a large volume pump to move the water through the plant sites, constantly circulating it to make sure there are never any stagnant areas in the root-zone.

The basic premise behind the design works like this:

The pump forces the water through the buckets and it is drawn through the end and dumped back into the head-bucket. I will also be doing a top-feed waterfall aeration system instead of using airstones. I don't like the sound of that loud ass pump and I would like to avoid it if possible!

As for contruction, it was REALLY simple. I took my jigsaw and cut the bottoms off the 5-gallon buckets (well, 10 of the 11 buckets). Then I used that to trace out a template on the first lid. I cut two holes (offset from each other) in the lid and put the bucket tops in the holes. Then, I took my 2" hole-saw and cut holes in the bottom of the bins. One on each end, and offset (to increase circulation). I inserted bulkhead fittings and screwed them tight. Then I connected them all with 1" black poly tube. The ends still need a pair of elbows because the tube doesn't bend that well. Lol. Once I get those installed, the end will cinch together like it should.

I'm glad you guys like it. I've actually never seen anyone on here with a RDWC system before. It wasn't until after I started going to a different forum for a while that I saw people with these types of systems...
