spots on clones
    #705836 - 01/09/14 04:11 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Was hoping someone could help me out. I've had Alot of issues with this system n have it to a point i can keep plants alive finally. They are growing fast but there is some discoloration I've noticed on one of the fan leaves. Also there is yellowing at the very tips of leaves. They've been in this system for about one week. Its a dwc bubbler/fogponic combo. I have a 600 w light on them that started at three feet and I've lowered a few inches each day. Its sitting  at about two feet now w no noticeable heat increase at the plant level.  Im pushing notes at about 1.6 using three step along with AN sweet n little clonex. The ph is 6.5.

Some yellowing of leaves and leaf tips (sometimes) are normal during the rooting stage of clone development. That means the cutting has begun to focus it's energy on growing roots over photosynthesizing.  Also, get that light back another three feet if you have the room or shade the clones with cloth.  Direct intense light is bad for rooting clones because it forces the cuttings to photosynthesize instead of grow roots.  It's when the clones have been transplanted and have begun growing again do we treat them like vegatating plants and get aggressive with the lights and nutes.  Also, rooting clones and clones roots enjoy a ph of around 5, so change out your reservoir and bring your ph down to five.  What is your room and root zone temperatures?

Temp at the root zone has been an issue. That's y so many died before. Because of the fogger temps were at 97.  I've got it rigged up now to reduce temp to 73.  once i get the proper hosing i should be able to see another doin temp.  and Im not worried about the roots. They started rooting about two week ago n roots are at two and three feet. Im looking for flawless growth as i sell clones (legally). As far as the ph. Clonex recommends 5.5-6.5 and since roots are grown Im at the high end

Also had a question about the upward curling. U can see on the lower fan leaves.

Stop misting them.  Those spots looks like light burn to me.  What happens is that the light is refracted by the water and burns the leaves.

You also need to drop your pH to about 5.8, you are running it too high for hydroponics.

300 is a pretty high PPM for a starting point, make sure that you aren't adding extra cal/mag.

I also think that you are running your nutrient solution way too strong for that young of a plant.

The light refraction through the water makes sense so ill stop misting. They are growing pretty aggressively for their size. I may try to come down a small amount on the nutes to try to remedy the leaf blade curling.  i Will also lower the ph. Thanks

What are the temps in the grow space or at least at the top of the plants surface. Sides of the leaves curling up is usually caused by high heat.

Itsonly occuring on lower leaves making me think it was from when i fist got them and was still working out how to drop the temps in the root zone. at the canopy level its 76 and these curled leaves are shadowed by the new growth.

UPDATE: The original yellowing stopped spreading to other leaves. Still trying to work out the kinks to fix other issues. PH 5.3 EC went down to .48 overnight after diluting res to 1.4. Going to raise up to 1.2 and see how the plants respond.  res temp 74.6.
Issues Im seeing now are brown leaf tips. working from tip and going down the side about halfway down leaf.  pale leaves with dark veins.  My next remedy will be to raise the lights as the hood is about 1 ft from the canopy at this point. Any other suggestions?

Raise the lights.  Then you will want to change out your res, run it with plain ph'd water for 24 hours, and then replace it again with half of the nutrient strength you were using.

its one thing to tell someone what to do but im eager to learn.what is the reason for the plain water for 24 hours. And as I understand. if ur ec is rising it means the plants are using more water than nutes and vice versa.  Is this correct

Yes that is correct.

It's been awhile since I've been in hydro but this is my understanding of it.

When they have been burned and are overloaded with nutrients, flushing with plain water allows the plant to absorb water alone, and expel some excess nutrients from the root system.

When I've done this I've noticed a rise in the PPM, this was from a starting point of zero.

But like I said, it's been awhile since I've been in hydro, so this may not be 100% correct.
