My lights aren't doing anything
    #698637 - 12/12/13 01:02 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I've purchased lights based on the specifications I've read. After trying to birth seedlings a couple of times, and other types of seeds, I've realized that they aren't growing. I've birthed seedlings on a window sill and gotten great results until they got to the point of needing more light, so I know how sprouting is supposed to happen.

My lights are T8 daylight Flourescents, 32 watt, 2700 lumens each, 6500k.

Here is the product description: http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/ge-active-spaces-32w-t8-2pk/6000016935877

Any ideas?

Just going by the light you chose you have a long way to go. Without knowing anything about your grow other then the light makes it hard to help.

how far away are you keeping your lights? My t5ho's 6500k are still working really well and an inch and a half on both ends are burnt out... I just keep them less then an inch from the top. I just have to adjust the height daily so they don't grow into the bulb.

Light source aside (your going to need more than that to flower) it could be poor soil/conditions causing the seedlings to stop growing. If you have a house-plant soil mix it might be preventing the plant from growing good roots and it has to spend all its energy digging through concrete. If its not light, its the soil.

I had a seed starting mix that was like a fine brown powder but was not very good by itself, it could barely take up water--literally just pooling up on the surface and only penetrating a quarter inch or so, even after sitting for an entire day. I solved the problem by mixing in coco to fluff it out, now it wets and provides the basic nutrients that the seedlings need early on. I use pure coco, so starting in that alone can be a bit difficult to feed at first. The best growth comes from a medium that has a good air/water holding capacity and easy for the plant to grow roots in, so usually something light/fluffy. Lots of people use perlite for that reason.

Those lights you have should be enough to get the seedling started. It might stretch out a bit, but it should still show signs of growth if the light is close enough. Pics?

My soil should be fine. I followed the organic guide in the soil section where I use coco coir, perlite, worm casings, magnesium, calcium..

Yep, the lights are generally an inch or two from the plants.

Well. I guess I'll try this again, since it seems I'm doing everything right.

When should I start feeding nutes by the way?

(newb responses fyi)

so the seeds just aren't sprouting at all? You may want them a little further away if they haven't sprouted yet... I've never used t8 though but id imagine they should do something at that stage. With the t5ho's i've used I started closer to 18 inches away then lowered little by little after they sprouted.

How is your watering schedule?

Could there be to many nutes in that soil for seed starting? I use Kellogg's patio plus and that seems to be perfect nute wise for seed starting/young plants up to 3-4weeks then I began supplementing.

hows your ph?

How many days ago did you plant?

That's possible. What is the minimum to grow?

Did you pop the seeds before you put them in the soil?  Temps should at least be in the 70's

my house is weird during the winter, my thermostat says 70 and is set to 70 but during the cold nights it feels much colder then that, though the thermostat stays 70.... I think it could be the reason my stems turned purple; cold nights and exhaust/lower fan circulating. Probably a little below 70 it may take much longer to sprout especially compared to spring or summer temps here in this part of cali.
