No. Lumens should not be considered when buying lights. The most important things are a good spectrum and enough watts...about 40-60w per sq ft.

Ill link to it when i get home. Its on the hortilux website and i have hortilux on facebook and theyre ALWAYS posting this.

They say that lumens, par, kelvin, and all that dont matta for shit. Just watts and spectrum.

Their standard hps actually has more lumens than their super hps which is pretty much the standard hps. The super hps has less lumens but a better spectrum allowing more useable light to the plant despite less lumens.

Wattage = intensity...end of story.

Also never use the dimming feature on a ballast because it will alter the spectrum of the bulb. Same applies for ballasts with a boost or super lumens. The spectrum is the most important thing. Without a good spectrum you can have all the watts in the world and still have inadequete lighting.

Lighting Terms to IGNORE for Plant Growth.

Lumens, Kelvin Temperature, CRI, CCT, CIE Chromaticity.All these terms are standard lighting measurements that tell us how the light looks to the HUMAN EYE. These terms do not represent the quality of a light spectrum nor do they take into account the McCree Curve.- See more at: http://eyehortilux.com/education-room/grow-guide.aspx#sthash.nk2Wv8gX.dpuf

They also say that on a hps bulb the lumens can actually INCREASE towards the end of the life of the bulb. However, the spectrum degrades as the chemistry in the bulb gets old..requiring replacement of the bulb after a few months.

If someone set up a grow light for use on their driveway or something and wasnt growing plants under it then they could dim it, boost it, and prolly use the bulb for at least 2 to 3 years cuz in that situation you just need to illuminate an area for the human eye and spectrum isnt a big concern.

In a grow room however, spectrum is highly important because the plants see differently than we do and you want to make sure all the light your bulb is putting out is being used by the plants. Thats why people use MH in veg and HPS in flower and why you dont see green in the grow bulbs but you can use a green light at night to check flowers. In all those situations what youre concerned about is spectrum.

Remember, you need a cool spectrum, usualy 5500 or 6500k cfl's. During flowering you want warm spectrum light at around 2700k a piece. The higher the wattage (more lumens) the bigger the output at that spectrum. Spectrum is everything. ----K is kelvin. -edit
