Thiing out of lower branches and fan leaves?
    #693214 -

Sup fellow growers!  I have started my first indoor grow even though I have done a few outdoor grows in the past. I am six weeks in flower now under 2 1K lights in a soil grow.  I trimmed a ton a fan leaves and lower branches that were very thin and wispy. I have never done this with my outdoor grows. DO any of you other growers do this. pros and cons? Thanks!!

Here is a couple shots of the babys tonight!  Six weeks in, guessing three left. Grow log planned for my second run coming up in december!!!

Looking great man.

I trim some of the very lowest off.  But if there's a bit of light hitting me, I leave me.

No real cons to doing it, except maybe less popcorn nubs to use for hash.  There's some theories out there about it saving energy for the plant and allows it to focus on the main buds.  I think it's mostly bullshit though.

It can help if the leaves are directly blocking light but whenever possible don't remove the fan leaves. They make food for the plant and energy to grow.

Simply put if you need more power to the house you don't go on the roof and rip off the solar panels.

I only ever remove fan leaves that have more than 50% damage on them.

Nice looking grow though, Bluntguy207.  I take it you and Farmer Joe know each other IRL.

I trim the lower branches at about 2-3 weeks into flower then leave most of it, removing the occasional lower branch that is doing very poor. Shade leaves as they die.

Your stuff looks like its fine and too far into flower to want to mess with it. There is an art to balancing the lower stuff, not to tricky just gotta see how the light penetrates the canopy. After a few grows you'll know how to set the plant to optimal trim mode.

Pros = improved air flow, so less chance of mould

Looking good :-)

Indeed, there is an artform to trimming and pruning an indoor grow.  I like to do all my trimming and pruning in the vegetative stage by kind of judging my environment and climate I can determine how much more the plants are going to develop and make my decision on how many leaves or branches I am going to cut away.  The only time I will cut anything away during flowering is only if it's a fan leaf or a bud that has been damaged over 50% by pests, diseases, fertilizer issues, or operator error.
