hot turn compost
    #685235 - 09/14/13 11:15 PM (10 years, 6 months ago)

Gf got me a spherical composter and I'm wondering if the compost I've been making is ready to mix into my next transplant.  All the material except for a few things (avocado skins and some twigs) are decomposed.  It smells very earthy, has no bugs in it and appears to be ready.  I've been adding material to it slowly since I first got it for my bday in late January.  Everything that went in there was vegetarian, and mostly dark green veggies and the unused pulp from my juicer.  I started out with just some miracle-gro somethin-er-other bag of crappy soil that had been sitting around for ages as my "base."

My ladies are ready to be moved into their new buckets, and I need to know what ratio to mix potting soil to compost.  They are all indica dominant hybrids, with the exception of the OGK.

The only sure way to know if its done is with a thermometer. I have a 55 gal tumbler raised up on poles.

Sometimes it looks done but if i put my hand down in the center it is HOT!

That means the bacterias are still breaking everything down and its not ready. Once its ready the temperature will stabilize back down at ambient temps.

The last thing you wanna do is transplant your delicate ladies and burn the roots.

First off, Primus sucks

It's a very small composter and I havent added anything to it, for nearly a month.  I'll check the temp and make doubly sure there are no clumps of mycelium n what not.  How do you you like to mix it in with your soil, SSH, or is it based on strength of compost?

Why wouldn't you want mycelium in there? Most fungi will be beneficial to your plants.

I hate slimy veggies!!!

My brothers been getting in to juicing lately and has a bunch of veggie scraps. He puts em on top the conpost and doesnt mix it...

I got PISSED at him the other day cuz i went to get some to transplant some small plants and all the veggie stuff just molded and had tons of flies.

I told him he needs to mix that shit thoroughly into the pile for it to decompose and not attract flies and maggots.

My current mix is one bag ffof, about 30 gal of bought city compost, grass clippings and whatever else i find around...its been workin badass, but watch out for the veggie scraps, make sure theyre done.

Flies and maggots, from my understanding, aren't detrimental to compost.

With the type of compost bin I have, you don't want to mix it too often.  So i put all the food scraps into it, lay some newspaper over that, then every 2 weeks I mix it in.

Theyre not really bad for the conpost but i dont want to be planting new transplants into soil full of maggots. Plus that attracts them to my yard and i dont want flies in my yard.

Ive seen people conpost in place with food scraps...it works but i dont like it.

what kind of bin do you have?

Yeah eggshells are a good source of calcium so keep puttin em in. I go through a lot of eggs too. I like to give em a quick rinse and then crush them into dust before i mix them in.

My dad makes coffee every mornin so he got an empty can just for his used grounds. Once its full he throws that in too, stimulates the worms.

Just dont use meat or dog shit or manures or anything like that
