MERCEDES - Police investigators said they arrested a suspect with a new type of marijuana in Mercedes.
Mercedes Police Chief Olga Maldonado said her department is trying to get the new, stronger marijuana off the streets.
A judge on Wednesday charged Eric Villarreal, 25, with possession of marijuana in connection with the case.
Police caught up with Villarreal when he pulled into a convenience store at Texas Blvd. and Expressway 83. Officials said they had received a tip the man would be at the store.
Officers found more than 2 ounces of the new pot in the man's car.
"It's a higher grade of marijuana. It's stronger, and it's something new that's coming up in the Valley," Maldonado said.
"It goes for a higher price," she said.
The judge set Villarreal's bond at $20,000. He could face up to a year in jail.
