 temperature question

hey quick question about temps in the grow room. One of my friends who grows told me to put the thermometer right under the light ontop of the plant pots to get the temp.. now I would have thought that by putting the thermometer under the light it would not be accurate or something..
cause in the grow room it was show the temps around 74ish .. then under the light the thermometer was around 82-84 ish... now what would be the best way to go by?

I measure temps at the canopy across the tops of the plants.

I put two in my tent. One at the canopy and one on the buckets. I like to know the temp of the top of the plant and the bottom . I have hot air moving out the top and cool air coming in the bottom. I think that ideal for me.
