Have a 1000 watt mh with batwing reflector and need to do some remolding.
Plants are 40 days old and clones have been in soil a week.
Question.
Would the light be to close at 4 ft for this young plants?

So a non vented bulb? Just do the hand test my man. Hang the light at what you think is close enough, and put your hand over the top of the plant with the back your hand facing the lamp. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for the plant.
That said I keep a 600 watt light about 2 ft from my tops but I vent it.

Think I'm going to be safe. More worried about light being to intense for this young plants.
The cold will keep the heat down.

Hand test for sure...My 1000w hangs about 2ft from my tops, I have a large oscilating fan on my plants plus my basement is chilly so above the canopy my temps now are 79-82C in direct light, 72C at dirt level and the rest of the room, they seem to be thriving. The fan also blows air directly on the bulb as it oscilates, made a difference of about 10 degrees. When summer comes along though I need to step up to the more powerful exhaust fan or else it will get too hot...my filter puts lots of backpressure on my 6" clip fan so it doesnt move massive ammounts of air, just enough to move some heat and let the filter do its job removing the smell.
I ended up hanging a thermometer sensor from my lampshade though, it sits above canopy height, thats so I know for sure what the temp is on the tops. So I get a reading from 2" above canopy directly under the lamp and a average room temp reading.

just doing clones 3 feet from the 1000 they wilted at 2 feet
