Bonsai Houseplant Topping Question! (WITH PIX)
    #634918 - 08/16/12 10:10 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

hypothetical topping question for seedlings

firstly is it too young?

Secondly, would the red line be the appropriate place to cut, leaving two "nubs" from each leaf/stem which will in turn create a "Y" shape in the stem at the place of topping?

thanks for all the help!

That would be more like FIMming (FIM = Fuck I Missed)
As long as you dissect the newest pair of leaves, it will still do its job. But for second opinion better wait for somebody more experienced.
Is it an autoflower or a regular flowering plant?

I would wait a few more days until the plant shows more development of the 2 nodes you plan to make dominant. Can you even see them yet? It doesn't look like there is any node development yet. There should be small balls/leaves developing right above where the leaves touch the main stalk. Those nodes grow into branches. Every new branch has a shade leaf at its base that shows up first, then node growth follows.

Not much seedling experience, but I wait till they are older before I top, at least 4 pairs of branching with developing nodes. You have two pair, three if you count that lower set, but it's pretty wimpy looking.

patience patience patience

I don't know any specifics, its just a house plant for growing in a windowsill

I need to get a diagram of nodes, I am kind of unsure what they are exactly.

Let me clarify that, a node is the point where a stem branches off of another stem--joints. Circled in blue is one new branch (connected at the node), notice the upper branches are smaller and the lower ones grow longer, giving the plant the Christmas tree shape. There is one shade leaf per branch (and each branch off a branch has a single shade leaf; attached directly underneath where it connects). Right now it looks like you just have the shade leaf and the branches are about to show up--you should have more than just a shade leaf at the node.

This one could have been topped a little earlier before those developed so much. Or let it grow out to about this and just top it one set lower. For the most part I let the plant get to where I know which main branches I will keep in the long run. For this one I would keep the 4 branches at the two center nodes. You'll notice that *most branching off the main stalk occurs at 90º angles on seedlings. The trick is to time it right and get all four branches to become the same size.

SO once I get some nodes I cut at the red line I drew, and the nodes will then become main stalks?

Actually... speaking of a Bonsai I really wondered what strain you got and how high you wanna grow it.
See, I had some autoflowers and I for one have to say one should rather bend them over instead of topping, because they don't veg long enough to give decent results with topping.
Topping is better when you can vegitate and you want to scrog your plant so you need more control over how she'll behave. Man when I'll do my next grow I'll buy some regularly flowering seeds and top the shit out of the plant. I have seen such a nicely topped grow here, but I don't find it right now, it'S very inspiring.

kind of, the red line you drew is more of the FIM as mentioned above, mine is more of a true topping. Your line cuts through the top and leaves a little. I would skip the FIM and just top normally at first.  In a few days when the plant grows a little more it will become obvious--watch where the new growth develops.

Technically your nodes are there, you just need to wait for more development beyond just the shade leaf at those points.

This one is a good example of a plant that should have been topped foot tall and veg'd for a couple of weeks. You can see in one of the photos how the plant has four main colas, because she was topped two times, first he topped the apical top, resulting into two tops and then topping each one of those again after only a few nodes, but you could practically go on and on if you have the time.
The side branches produce smaller colas normally.

TL;DR - Get some more lights on the seedling, it is looking pretty stretched.  Typically any time after the 3-4th leaf set you can do your topping
