MH pre beginner's question
    #618744 -

I tend to get myself a 120 W Metal Halide lamp from a home improvement store for like five Euros. It's one like they use it on construction sites, only smaller. Is that something I could use? Does someone have experience with that kind of light?

Here's a picture of the little guy:

I don't have much money at the moment and wanna do a small cupboard grow, so I'm searching for something cheap, lower wattage and not too hot. I might upgrade when I have more money and/or move to a bigger appt.

That doesn't look like a metal hallide to me. It looks like its a halogen lamp...

Oh, my bad... I mistook the terms. A little research and I saw it too, thanks.

Hmmm... I'm also thinking about buying one neutral white LED lamp with 8X3W high power LEDs. this is supposed to be equivalent to 120 Watt incandescent and costs 80 Euros.
At the moment ganjelina has just torn off the husk and raised her head out of the pot, germ leaves and one one very small pair of fan leaves. I have her in the cupboard in the evening and at night where she gets 15W Halogen and 11W 6500K CFL light. In the afternoon when I return from work I let her sit in the open window if sun is shining. I'm just thinking of what to do next...

Edit: Oh yeah I just found a vendor with a 150W MH system (79,95 Euros), 150W HPS lamp (19,95 Euros) nvm thanks though.

Halogens don't put out the  right spectrum of light.  All you're doing right now is adding more heat to your grow space.

Ok... I thought I could use them because a friend of mine once had some REEEEEALLY strong weed and he said he has it from a guy who vegged his plant in the bathroom with a halogen lamp and flowered it with a HPS.

But I saw on wiki that halogens put out only 3% of energy as visible light, the rest is mostly heat radiation in the infrared spectrum area.

Don't know, it's been a long time... he said the guy took a light from the home depot like workers used. I remember that because at that time I tried to build up some materials for an own little grow at that time. Guess the lord works in mysterious ways, huh ^^

Well you can get HPS and MH lights that are used for just lighting.  Hell most street lights are HPS.
