Outdoor Soil Prep
    #616137 - 04/03/12 04:18 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

This is my first post. I'll say thank you before anyone welcomes me noob-style. Thank you Growery and Shroomery you are wonderful resources!

With that out of the way, my question: what are some organic soil amendments that I can obtain in my forest environment, to aerate and fertilize my soil? I have purchased some guano, peruvian seabird 12-11-2 and mexican bat 10-1-1. I also have 4oz great white for a fungal/bacterial additive. I plan on sowing 10 seeds, right in the ground, and fed with creek water that's around 6.5ph - 7.0ph . I was thinking perhaps removing the top soil and recovering with leaves in a few areas of the forest, so I have something loamy to mix with the soil. Or maybe finding someone around here with a mulcher and using the really rotten trees?

Buy a worm farm. You can throw your organic waste into it and get free worm castings and fertiliser from it.

That's a good idea. Just need something to mix into this clay/silt bullshit. Probably just spring for some peat or coir

ya looks liek your ontop of it man!

what you may want to add is some gypsum which breaks up clayey stuff a bit and also adds calcium and a PH buffer. so maybe at pbottom of hole mix that up with the bottom clay stuff. it may not have as much clay after first 6 inches or so.

Mushroom compost is also good. If you're into growing shrooms then you can use your spent mushroom substrate on your garden afterwards.

the mushroom compost i think u are talking about is the stuff when you grow bisporus or normal mushrooms. Unless your using alot of peat with manure which is ok then

yeah the gypsum is a good idea for the veggie garden acrross the creek. i was gonna add dolomite lime to my holes along this tree line, would gypsum be better? I have over a month to mix the soil before sowing.

I plan on adding the peruvian sea bird guano into the soil, and top dressing with high N guano, kelp, and maybe try some other cheap/free organic fertilizers for flowering later on. I'm also gonna add the great white, and nothing else, to the creek water. Should I just follow the labels for each fert or are there any adjustments I should make for my tomatos?

How concerned should I be with the high iron and sulfur content supposedly in the creek?

dolomite will raise PH but does not condition clay like gypsum.

depending on animals in the area throwing some blood meal on and around the plants really helps keep deer at bay.
