I pretty much never cleaned my big blue bong except for my bowl, but never the actual bong or attached downstem.
well I started cleaning it and I swear I thought I broke something because the pull was so different.
It really need a cleaning, and I didn't even get to finish cleaning it yet.
It hits so much better, and it still was pretty epic before. 
I've had it for a few months and haven't cleaned it and man it really makes a difference.

 dirty bongs taste like smoking out of a sock man.
I have a dragon shaped pipe I've never cleaned because hes a stupid shape and twisty and bendy. I can barely draw air through it I only smoke dirty buds in him.

clean your glass. always keep it clean. i keep mine super clean. and i only use it when i have company over. so it's easy to clean each time. it's a sign of respect and class imo.

I change my bong water every 2 days, and if it sets more than a week without use it gets blasted with hot hot water inside and out dried and filled with nice cool water before use again.

super anal about glass...
with a bong, personally i rinse it out after each session. clean it 1x a week. but when you keep it clean, 'cleaning' doesnt take long at all.
like fb said - sign of class.

My bong bowls do tend to get a bit dirty before I clean them if I'm being honest. But I make sure my downstem/bong/water is always very clean.
I soak my bowls over night and then use each one until its dirty and switch for a new one. Fortunately I have a few bowls at my disposal so I usually always have a sparkling new one ready to rock.
