Transplanting then flowering...
    #594053 - 10/25/11 05:59 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I know it makes more sense to give some recovery time when transplanting, but my veg cabinet really can't handle anything over a 2 gallon pot. I've never had the pleasure of growing in a 5 gallon bucket (which is where the real heavy yields are) and I'd really like to try it.

I usually veg for a month in a half gallon container and either flower immediately or transplant to a 2 gallon for 1 week then flower. When I harvest and dispose of my soil, the whole 2 gallon bucket is generally full of roots.

If I were to transplant a plant from a half gallon container into a 5 gallon bucket and flower immediately, would it even take advantage of the extra space? Would it be a worthwhile investment in time/space/soil?

I just don't have any space for the transplant to start taking hold. Last time I xplanted and flowered immediately, it took about 2.5 weeks to switch rather than the 1 week I'm used to, so I assume it was building roots?

Thanks guys!

When that growth spurt happens when you go 12/12. I guess it would take advantage of that extra space. But maybe not as much as it would if you gave it an extra week in veg or so. Then again I have no clue really. I don't have any experience growing. Only what I've read.

I think if you spread the roots out well while putting them in the bigger pot I think you'll get a better quicker recovery time. I'd say a couple extra days should give them that much more time to grow.

But I'm a nooblet.

In order to grow good weed you need to be part carpenter, electrician, plumber, biologist, geneticist, chemist, and very willing to get dirty.

I've been working with power tools since I was 8, my dad is an electrical engineer who owned a 280 gal fish tank, and I studied biology with a specialty in genetics. Getting dirty comes naturally. I think my parents inadvertently trained me to be a weed grower.

See what you think on my first try.

not in my experience
the plant needs at least a week
after transplant
even still it wont utilize 5gallons
when you harvest and dispose of your soil, youll have a lot of waste
a root block not much bigger than your last transplant
and a bunch of over fertilized soil

ive seen this outdoors in an area where it is constantly 12/12
quite often in outdoor container plants

I'll have to stick to the 2 gallon buckets until I can get some t5's or something going then.

Thanks.

are you doing perpetual style harvesting?
why not transplant
then veg under your flowering lamps
for a week

Not perpetual, but sort of. I generally have at least one other plant flowering when I put a new one in so that doesn't work. I guess if I planned accordingly that'd be an option. :yesnod:

you lose a month doing that
a nicer veg space is gonna save you headaches
and allow you to grow how your growing is telling you to

i veg for a week+ at least in my flowering room
and if the clones arent ready(which they should always be)when i last harvested
then im losing at least 2 weeks where i couldve been flowering
if someone did this for efficiency, they wouldnt be happy with that

Yeah, but I usually (USUALLY) don't need smoke inbetween. Sometimes I cut it close, but I'm always OK (not to mention I have hash and edibles stored throughout my home for emergencies haha).

If I were worried about making money, yeah, I'm sure I'd be growing differently. But since its for myself, I don't mind a few weeks wait between harvest.

If a bigger veg room was an option, I'd surely go for that. But I really just don't have any room.

then veg under your flowering lamps!
they like it anyway!
the reds, and intensity seem to encourage flower sites
and less lateral? growth
if you have a conversion system, use MH for that brief time
if you have more than one light
use mh and hps, or any "combo" of lighting in this phase to provide all,or close to all spectrum

If you don't have time to spare/room to spare to veg the plant after transplanting I suggest doing as low stress transplant as possible some people cut the bottoms out of the pots and just double pot one on top of the other others cut away the entire pot and repot into a significantly bigger pot without breaking up the root ball. For what it's worth the first two or three weeks of flowering are often considered veg as the plant is adjusting it's hormones and what not to stop producing roots and focus on foliage/flowers after that period there isn't much root growth at all.

So basically I'm saying if you're going to transplant right before flowering to be gentle and not damage the roots too much as they won't have the same time to recover.
