Rubbermaid temp issues/question
    #590016 - 10/03/11 09:13 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Ok AFOAF has a question regarding temps.

AFOAF has a rubbermaid box setup, and for stealth purposes I needed to coat the insides with a material that would keep light OUT...no glowing plastic bs.  So, he/she opted to cover the inside in aluminum tape.
AFOAF has been running temp tests, adjusting fans etc and port sizes, light leaks and what have you.
Anyway, AFOAF is currently running ~140w of CFL in this enclosure, using ~3.5'' of total intake hole and ~3'' exhaust fan (computer 80mm) but his/her temps are now ~91 degrees after running all night.

Is his/her aluminum foil tape one addition to the bad temp? AFOAF understands it reflects heat energy as well as light, but does it reflect heat when covered in paint?
For instance, can he/she help the temp situation by spraying the foil with matte white paint?

Also, what inlet diamater total should he/she be working with with a 80mm fan?

dont think this is in the right foum,  but do you have a fan blowing on the plants in the case also?

AFOAF does not currently have plants in the box, and only has one fan (80mm as exhaust) at the moment.  He/she was trying to optimize the current space/setup so more wattage can be introduced at the same or lower temps, and introduce plants.

Sorry for the wrong forum, can a mod move this for me if it indeed is? Thought grow room design would fit

whats your ambient room temps?  What size is this box? How do you get fresh air into the box?  fresh air is required for the plants.  you also need to have a fan blowing on the plants to have they sway a bit.  This will help keep the plants strong and also help with air circulation.

Heres what A Friend Of A Friend (AFOAF) has:

(2)20 Gallon Rubber storage bins stacked on top of each other. The bottom of one container is on the top of the lid of the other, so  they are stacked like normal storage boxes (not flipped - less room but more stealth).

The bottom of the top container is cut  interior of the lip, and an equal space is cut out of the lid of the bottom container. I then taped the small space between lid and bottom to prevent light leaks.

For airflow AFOAF is using an 80mm exhaust fan only, positioned in the middle of the grow box on a 80mm hole (has a large snorkel to keep light from exiting, and is set above the light fixtures). If there is negative pressure within the box, than air will need to enter so AFOAF has cut 3 ports (with light diffusing snorkels - aka painted paper towel roll elbows) to allow that. Each is approx 1.5'' diameter, and they are positioned so that one is in the center of the top bin, and the other two are on the bottom corners of the bottom bin.

AFOAF decided to spray-paint his box (which is already 100% covered in adhesive aluminum) flat white to see if that helps. AFOAF was not sure if the aluminum would still insulate/deflect heat if it was covered in a coat of paint, but experience will now tell.

AFOAF read that upwards of 2x inlet diameter to exhaust diameter was needed. Anyone else care to add to the validity of that?

you should have just installed a 80mm intake air as well that could also blow the plants or they will grow weak and the airflow would also help keep temps down.  Sounds to me like there's not enough airflow to keep temps down.

this all depends on the outside air temps also.  I mean if your outside air temps are like 80.  then you have these bins with lights in them within such a small space.  your temps will be too high no matter what you do.

But if the outside air is lower and you have sufficient air flow through the box then you should be good.

Its kind of like a computer case and heat.  Airflow is key in keeping temps lower.

I don't think the point or the tape have much to do with your heat issue.

Ambient temps are 69-73 degree.

AFOAF has been reading stories of peoples' box temps dropping anywhere from 2 - 5 degrees switching from foil to white paint.  AFOAF just added white paint on top of foil haha

If AFOAF gets another 80mm fan (or what have you) where would it serve the best purpose at this point? Positioned to direct airflow around the plants, add to my existing exhaust etc?

you want the other fan to be near the bottom side blowing air inside the box.  Then you have an intake fan and an exhaust fan.

One blowing cooler air in over your smaller plants then one near the top sucking hot stale air out.

AFOAF removed the exhaust from its bottom position, converted that port to an intake (passive) and moved the 80mm to the top of the box where he/she fitted a little ducting (90* bend) to fight light.

A small (1.5''?) laptop fan was found in AFOAF's collection of skeleton electronics, and it was placed to blow directly onto the "happening" area.

So for those keeping track:

Reflective aluminum tape was painted in matte white
(reduction of 0 - 2*f)
Small laptop fan retrofitted to move air within the box
(reduction of 3-5*f)
Relocating exhaust 10'' higher and using the old port for passive intake (+3.5'' intake diameter)
(reduction of 5-7*f)

For a total of ~ -10*f difference.

Each step was taken and then temps were measured after ~2 hours. All variables were not held 100% constant so there's a lot of variability to expect in those temp differences (moved a bunch of shit around after installing mini fan, for instance).

All intake air is passive, the only exhaust is the 80mm fan.

So the box is currently 80*f @144watts. not bad, but there are another 45 or so watts to add
