Opium Poppies
    #588984 - 09/27/11 05:51 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

The other day, the opium poppies I planted had just sprouted.
Anyways, I had put chickenwire over the tops of the pots to guard it from birds.
I just went outside to have a ciggarette, and found some roaches in the pots.
Is this normal? Can it affect my grow? Will they eat my poppy sprouts?
Maybe i should bring them in at night?

The only time I see roaches is at the Day-n-Night-Deli, or else inside Pizza Pops when I was a child. (yes I bit one in half inside a pizza pop and nobody to this day believes me).

Im not sure what they will do to your poppies... just curious what colour poppy do you have?

Being from Tasmania, they have white and purple petals
Like this:

Although mine look like grass since they have just sprouted

Yes it is, although somebody has told me its quite difficult. Poppies are opposite to MJ so they have 12/12 light during veg and 18/6 during flowering. When my chemdogs go into flower I plan to chuck a couple poppies in there also just to see how it goes.

I don't think i know of any guides for indoor. Somni-forums: http://opium.poppies.org is a good place to start, but rego is closed so you can only browse the threads :frown:
I've emailed the site operators as i can still see new members being signed up, but they dont reply :shakefist:

Another place with some cool guides and info is www.drugs-forum.com, although their opium forum can move slowly at times.

Well, alot of people cannot tell the difference between opium poppies and the hundreds of other types of poppies.
And of the opium bearing poppies (what you want is papaver somniferum) there are so many different varieties. Alot of people think all opium poppies are white or purple. But there are also many beautiful ornamental poppies which can yeild some decent opium.

When the season comes back around, I'm gonna build a raised garden bed and just have my own private poppy field  Probably the taz strain due to potency and yeild, but will chuck some nice ones in there too such as the "danish flag" and "midnight" opium poppies.

If you can get your hands on them, other great strains to try are:
1. Gigantemum: Giant pods with massive yields
2. Hens n chicks: big pods surrounded by little pods
3. Tasmanian
4. Persian

Being in Australia, most of what i can get is Tasmanian. There is an aussie shamanic shop that sells some, but the range is limited, and prices quite high compared to the rest of the world.

Good luck with the future project.
Oh yeah, if you figure out how to get registration into the somniforums, slip us a pm

Cheers
Magickz

Yeah, I hate that a lot of forums that have some sort of activity about opium don't accept new members.  Sheesh.

I found this forum when I was looking for opium information and I saw that it's fairly new.  Hopefully, we can get some sort of conversation going.

I see that you guys are trying to grow them.  I was wondering if you have any updates?  I'm trying to see if it's worth it.  I'm looking at this page about opium effects and it's interesting to say the least.  I was wondering if any of you have tried it and if it's worth it to grow them.

according to wiccan from the shroomery it takes around 120 days!

Quote:

The opium poppy, Papaver somniferum, is an annual plant. From a very small round seed, it grows, flowers, and bears fruit (seed pods) only once. The entire growth cycle for most varieties of this plant takes about 120 days.

so yeah, i´m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping they´ll do good enough in my small pots

That definitely isn't right.  My poppy plants come back year after year.  They are definitely a perennial.

Upon further research it depends on the variety.  Some poppies are annual, perennials, biennial.  So were both right :vaped:

You can, though there are very many different strains of papaver somniferum, and not all of them have decent, if any opium content in them.

I know for a fact that "Hoyt" brand poppy seeds sold in Australian supermarkets are Tasmanian strain. Though thats probably because Tasmania is one of the worlds largest Legal Poppy growers. They grow it for use in medications, so naturally some of those seeds end up on our supermakert shelves

You can try them, but other than by being told by someone who knows already, the only way to know for sure is grow it and try... Sorry can't be much help with US supermarkets :frown:

If I were you, I'd just order some of the proper seeds from online.
There are hundreds of places that stock and ship it.

Strains that are good include but are not limited to:
Giganteum
Hens and Chicks
Tasmanian or tazmanian
persian

There are a few others but cant think of them right now.
Do some research on suppliers, google is your friend.
Actually, i reckon some of Growerys sponsors would sell them, check it out
Cheers

Look around on Ebay.  Lots of people sell them.  I bought Hens n chicks and china whites on there.  They came up fine, but I have not harvested yet.  Don't know how good they will be.
Does anyone know if hens n chicks develop more slowly than other types of poppies?  My hens are way behind my china whites.  The hens don't even have pods yet.  Also, Three of my stems got bent somehow.  The pods are still a healthy looking color of green and still appear to be swelling.  I guess they are alright.  Does this stem breaking thing  always happen?  It happened to three different stems at the same time.  All were at different stages of development.  I DO NOT think that anything fell on them.  Could it have been slugs?  They bent at the joint between a leaf and stem.  All three.  It will be two weeks since the petals fell off of the first one Thursday.  But the crown is not erect yet.  Have not scored the pod yet.  Should I go ahead and do that?

Opium poppies can only grow back by reseeding. The only poppy strain that can be used for opium production is Papaver Somniferum, which is an annual.

Not true....It's dependent on you climate whether they can grow back year after year.  Even a quick google search show this.

June would be way too late to plant right?  most papa poppies need 60 degree temp too i think

lol goddamnit!  I tried sowing 600 whole foods seeds a couple years ago (I bought so much cause they roast 99% of them) and I think I saw the roots of some but they all died out prob. cause it was so damn hot.

Plant them in the fall.  Then they will sprout in the spring.  They need a cold shock to sprout.  Just order some off of the internet if you want some good poppies.

alotta websites sell them for legit purposes... then of course you have all the ethnobotanical sites... I don't feel right recommending any though I never bought poppy seeds online

the ones you get on bagels and in "health food" stores that sell wholesale amounts of poppy seeds are often if not always roasted before sold so they aren't very good for growing

There's a few ethno-botanical that are shroomery sponsors, I've ordered from them a number of times.  Good stuff.
