50W/ft^2?

i think i may have built too large a room
ive got 3600w of hps for a 8x12x8 room
i have a 4x8 tray i was planning on placing all the plants in for flowering.
leaving 2ft of walking room(shoulda been a foot)all the way around the tray, inside the room
the lights hang over the tray. maybe the outside edges of all the hoods measure 5X9
inside walls of 8x12 room covered with panda film stuff, better than panda film. i forget the name
smooth concrete floor
room stays cool all day.
anyway, with the size of my "closet" i get 4800w minimun wanted. with the space of lights and plants im in the 2000-2500w wanted range. around 35w/ft^2 right?
how much light/energy, etc am i losing in that air space from plants to walls of room?
i really dont want to shrink the room
any suggestions, or words of wisdom?
mahalo

A 4 x 8 only needs 2000 watts.That would be 62.5 watts per sq ft.
I think you've done over kill. The room could be bigger, IMO.

I was liking the 4x8 idea. No such thing as to much light. As long as you can keep it cool anyway.

I think you're misunderstanding the rule. It's 50w/ft^2 of GROWING space, not just general space. You only need to light the tray (plus theoretically maybe a foot on each side if the plants are going to grow over the edges) so you don't need to include your 2ft of walking around space in the measurements.

then its perfect!
thanks mr ba11sach
the lights are set to (really high forgetting words) BEAM light about 1'-1.5' outside the perimeter of the 4X8 tray
so basically LIGHTING a 5x9 area, in a 12x8

will this http://www.wormsway.com/detail.aspx?sku=SSFDT140(capable of) 16A 240V digital timer [single outlet) work with my system?
5, 600W 240V HPS @ 2.9A/ea
my phone isnt wifi lately so i cant upload pics of the closet progression, but im almost finished!
only thing now is questions
-how do i find out what cfm rating my fan/s are? -is it better to have a free air drawing system or a system that fills the closet at a higher cfm rating than is being withdrawn??? -is it ok to have a 10" fan brining cool air in an "airtight" closet, and TWO 6" fans split with ducting thru the 5 lights, pulling air out of the closet -do these fan systems conflict? -is it ok to join the 2 6" ducting (once outside the closet) with a Y reducing it to ONE 6" duct line to export the air outside? -is it ok to keep ballasts on a board up in the ceiling rafters? -i have a filter on my 10" fan, how much loss in air flow should i expect? -how much loss in air flow should i expect from all the ducting being split btwn 5 lights (X pattern)with many tight turns
im sure ill think of some other questions soon
this is all so new to me, im very proud of what ive created, and i really want to make sure before its too late that i have dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's

ALSO
should i water....COULD i water, (pros and cons) from the bottom
as in fill the 4X8 tray they are sitting in with water/nutrient mix
the tray has 1" tall risers all over the bottom, to elevate the plants from a flat surface i suppose so it'll probably take 5-10 gallons just to go over that 1" riser to the bottom of the plant pots
i worry that ill have too much nutrient build up in the tray, if i do it this way, which seems like it will make it difficult to flush. especially regular flushings
i know hand watering 20some plants isnt that difficult, even in the heat of flowering, but my roommate will be taking care of the girls for weeks at a time, and he is no longer strong like ox.
im going to set up a trash can with a spigot at bottom. valve, and hose. that way they can all be watered EASY
...but then part of me has always been curious about bottom watering

If you're talking about a flood and drain then yeah, but if you're talking about just filling the tray with water and letting is just sit there in the tray the whole time and not draining and refilling then thats a bad idea in my opinion. Also, the timer you listed doesn't say how many watts it is rated for, so I can't comment on if it should work or not.

3750W and a max of 16A i think the 16A is a bit of truth stretched because every other timer like that is 15A so with 5 2.9A ballasts, i worry its insuficient
i was thinking simply filling the tray, and letting the plants suck up all the water but maybe they wont suck the water out of that 1" gap from riser to bottom of tray

Having the water in the tray, stagnant like that is going to cause ALL sorts of problems from algae to root rot. The roots need a break from the water and will not get it if they are just sitting in stagnant water. The only way that works is if you A: Are using a bubbler like a deep water culture setup, or B: You are using a wick system sucking the water up to the roots medium through some type of wick from a protected aerated reservoir.

what about capillary action of soil? hydrophilic...
kinda the same thing as rooting cacti above lightly moistened medium
it will pull all the water from the tray
i dont know what point im trying to make
im not going to fill the tray, too many cons
how about my import/exhaust system. could you help me there

I thought we were talking hydroponic, Im not sure about doing what you described with soil instead of a hydro medium. Someone else could prolly answer your question better
