cooling a 12kw flower room
    #572646 - 07/17/11 03:22 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

crunch time!

going to need to cool 12kW of HPS.  i am planning on air-cooling them, so my math says a 36,000 BTU (3 ton) AC system should handle things just fine.

the location is a warehouse so power and space are no issue.  the room itself should be about 18x18x10.

my first instinct is to either get a single 36000 btu mini split, or run two 18000+ units.

power is no issue, have plenty of that.  is there any reason mini split(s) would not be the best option?  if i have to run dual units, is there any issue with putting them next to each other on the roof?  is there some kind of spacing requirement for the outdoor side of a mini split?

lol an ac unit that big plus air cooled fans should be just fine. though any room with more then 6 HID lights can get problematic as far as hot spots are concerned. when your getting that big i find its easy to keep the ambient temp down but you will find little hot pockets throughout the room that can toast your girls without you realizing till its too late.

just from my experience anyway.

yeah thats why i was almost thinking either a multi-zone mini split or just using two systems might be smart.  we'll also have a good solid number of wall mounted 16" oscillating fans to keep the air moving around.

well if budget isnt much of an issue (which from your posts doesn't sound like it) why not just split it into two rooms? 6 lights per room. i think it would be easier to deal with plus it would allow you to play around more if you ever wanted to say grow out some landrace sativa's or different strains that need lower temps or higher temps and longer cycles. then again i always liked to play around too much with different strains

thats how i would do it anyway.

I think if at all possible i would try to space out your cooling units as much as possible if you are going to use multiple units.  I would think it would create less hot spots this way.  Putting one at each end of the room and dirrecting the flow with fans (almost creating a circular airflow)I would think that would keep circulation of cool fresh air under control.  Some high out put exhaust fans and you should be good.

I agree I've though about it and I'd rather have 4 units 1 each corner and fans to help throughout and you could run 2 and then the other 2 or something.

an update to this thread:

changed the room design. its now going to be two rooms 9x18ft each.  each room will have its own 24k btu mini-split.  each room will have 6kw of HPS that is being air-cooled using outside air and isolated from the room itself. the indoor unit is getting mounted up high on the wall in the middle of the long side.  that means that the ends of the room are ~9ft from the unit.  with a grip of oscillating fans i'm hoping this will avoid major hot spot issues.

the first room is all built and we just put the outdoor side of the mini split up on the roof tonight so i'll report back on how this ends up working when i've got everything running

Don't be a pussy, go with 8kw per room.

Just kidding, sounds like fun

already ahead of ya chief.  mounting the indoor side of the split offset to one side just enough so i can mount another one right next to it if i want to.  we've got 10ft ceilings and if i end up doing SOGs only (we're doing a mix of things right now) i could easily run 2 levels of lights and tables.  12k per room, total of 24k in flower.

:shoosh:

i'm down as fuck but i need to see what strains of mine stretch by what amount.  would be a real bitch and a half to build everything and find out i didnt leave enough headroom.  once the two new rooms are up, running, and i can do a couple cycles through them it is a strong possibility i will go 2 layer.
