I'm using a 400 watt HPS, but I'm thinking a little more light on the sides would be good. I'm looking at a 150 HPS, but I'm wondering if it's o.k. to hang the ballast vertically, to hit the lower branches, or if thats not good.

I've seen it done plenty of times before, but I think your leaves might become a little over lit. The chloroplasts on the underside of the leaves are very light sensitive and designed to only receive light through the upper leaf pigmentation. I'd recomend getting some CFL's or better yet, a few LED panels. They work wonders for supplmental lighting and you won't have to worry about their position.

Thanks! I have an extra 125w CFL that I can use, I just wasnt sure if I could mix HPS and CFLs during budding. I'll give it a shot!

You can, just be sure to make spectrums. It'll help a lot with lower bud production as well.
