I think it would take some torrential Rains to make a good sized mound of lime to go away.

i want to say i read that crushed glass around the plants will stop slugs. Dunno if thats true though. Just encountered slugs at my patch. I'm in washington and we get quite a bit of rain(rained past week and half pretty much non stop) so lime really isn't going tow ork for me:(

Salt will definitely keep slugs away. We like to mess with the nasty big black ones we get here and dump salt on them. They get all slimey and try to shed the salt with slime.

You know what ewe works for bugs and slugs? Dog flea powder sprinkled on the ground around the plant. Kills anything trying to cross it.

Salt will deffinatly do it. They will melt like the witch from wizzard of oz! But again if you have loads of rain it won't work.

Won't the lime be watered away?

Depends on your watering technique.  I draw a wide line around my plant (not just around the stem) and I don't wash it away when I water...
