Anyone know how to recycle fox farms ocean forest soil
    #537713 - 03/17/11 09:08 PM (13 years, 14 days ago)

I notice that after a grow or so, the nutrients are depleted. Anyone have any advice or techniques on how to replenish the soil. I was thinking of resuming the composing / red wigglers. Maybe just buying soil is easier.

The nutrients are spent long before just one grow. Usually by the end of veg you'll be needing to feed your plants if you want to grow them to their full genetic capability.

And you can replenish the nutrients by adding guano, compost and some worm castings, but I feel like it's better to just buy new soil or make new soil from scratch if you're going through all that hassle already.

Compost.

You can also till it into your garden or do a lasagna bed with it.

I just toss mine into my outdoor compost bin and let the worms eat down the roots and stems and that is what eventually goes into my outdoor veggie garden.

Too bad mine is an indoor grow. Cool gif btw. I'll do a compost and trough in soil as often as I can. Try to go with organic tea nutrients too from now on; maybe that is better tasting? We will see.

So you went 2 grows on the same FFOF?

You can add 2tbsp per gal kelp, 4tbsp per gal Alfalfa, and if you haven't already amended I'd amend with 2tbsp/gal agricultural lime or oystershell flower or if neither of those are available dolomitic lime, you may also want to add worm castings, humic extract, humic ore (azomite is 45% humic ore). Spray with an aerated compost tea and let sit for a month.

The lime is good for some time as is the humic ore as it takes a while to break down I don't know how often that should be replenished, I'd hazard to guess humic extract every grow, humic ore maybe every 5-6grows as with the lime. Alfalfa, kelp, guano, worm castings, etc each grow.

I haven't yet replenished soil with Alfalfa but I think I'd prefer using it over strong manures, blood meal, etc.
