Can Seeds Get Too Wet?
    #535653 - 03/10/11 07:05 PM (13 years, 21 days ago)

well out of 18 15 germinated within 32hours,

out of 15 only 1sprouted so far....can too much moisture be not good for the seed?
first time using rockwool cubes for germination...
been inthere 4days since taproot exposure....

so can a seed get too wet and die from too much moisture or am i jumping the gun?

Yeah, man, they can definitely be too wet after the taproot has emerged. Before they pop you can pretty much submerge them, but after they are in the rockwool you need to be careful to not keep them sopping wet. Just need to be fairly moist, soak the rockwool then pick it up and give it a gentle squeeze, when its not dripping it should be good.

Did you balance the water used to saturate the cubes too?

Why don't you just put them in rapid rooters or just put them an inch deep in soil. What is up with germination in a bag, way more likely to have bacteria or mold infect the seeds. Nature is really simple, why screw with it...

Trying to make science out of something simple, I'll never understand. Here is my analogy;
You are trying to make a baby in a test tube instead of just doing it the normal way.

well because im going too be growing in just rockwool i have a 30lbs bag of loose rockwool figure im gonna use it....

i germinated in paper towel method, just waiting for cotyledons too appear out of rockwool cubes then transfer then in 3gallon rockwool pots...

just one made it out...the other arent looking too good i dont think i gave them enough air exchange

I germinate in zip-loc bags with a VERY high success rate, the sealed container keeps the moisture way up where it needs to be to permeate the seed husk quickly. I also put them on the cable box after they get bagged with a wet paper towel. Most my stuff germs in 24hrs, I've seen 16-18hr germination's with this method too. The heat is really key to making it happen quickly.

well they do need air to start metabolism and prevent rot some dissolved in water so if you keep it fresh thats OK. Esp if you let the girls get a decent tap and not just crack. i mean ya im sure it works but if your not watching carefully could cause issue. why people sprout in paper towel or rockwool and you never read guides saying throw in a glass of water.

cheers
