 How many inches should your light be in vegatation

I just put my rooter into a cup of some soil but I don't know how far the light is supposed to be from the plant. I'm going to keep the light on for 24hrs.

what type of light?
cfl\flo 1 to 10 inches
mh\hps 1 to 4 feet
250watt 1 to 2 feet
400watt 1.5 to 3 feet
600watt 2 to 4 feet
1000watt 4 feet and up
using a fan you can get closer, good rule of thumb put your hand out if it burns your hand it will burn your plants. Start further away a move it closer every couple days till you get it close as possible with buring.
