250 watt CFL Indoor Closet FFOF Northern Lights(Pics)
    #501519 - 11/28/10 06:48 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Day 4.
Growing Nirvana Northern Lights

10 seeds were put "in the ground" on Wednesday the 24th and all but 1 have sprouted.
They were watered with pH 6.7 distilled water.

They are currently in a veg. container which is a store bought plastic 18x18x18 inch cube.

There are 4 drilled holes in the lid and installed in them are 4 IKEA standard and individually corded sockets , with 4, 14 watt CFL's, 5000 K bulbs.  I also lined the cube with aluminum foil.  There is a $6 4 inch fan installed in the front and it is sucking air out.  There are 5 one inch holes on the opposite side of the cube where air is brought in.  3 are at the top and 2 are at the bottom.  The container holds 16 solo cups and will support 10 plants up to 3 weeks in age.

Lights are on 24 hrs.
Temps are at 78-82.

Careful with the tin foil or you could burn your plants.

Day 8

as said before, removing the tin foil did drop the temp, but it seems to be causing a little more stretching than I'm accustom to.  I upped two of the bulbs to 27 watt, 5000k.

I also appears that the leaves surface seems to be a little rasied.  I remember reading about this, but do not remember what causes it.

Plant were watered today with 6.7 pH distilled water

They look like happy little plants. Can you get a little breeze on them to strengthen the stems? I think upward curl is heat stress but they look just fine to me. Check out the Doctors Diagnosis section, lots of great info and pictures there.

Day 9

Changes made

I put a 9 inch fan in the closet the create some air movement.
Stems are already getting more firm.

I started a thread in the Doctors Diagnosis.  Come to find out my pH meter was giving me some bad #'s  my 6.7 distilled water was more like 5.5-5.7.  BOOOO

I re-watered with 7.1 pH adjusted Distilled water

Day 11

So not the happiest looking plants, but also not the saddest.  They should be ready to water again 1 to 2 days.

Upon outgrowing the cube they are in right now, they will be transplanted into 8 inch pots and moved to there final home.

This box lives in a closet, and is 4 x 1.5 x 5.  I did not build the box, I just attached the plywood front to it.  I did have to cut it in half and reassemble to get it in the closet...  With lights, there is about 3.4 ft of useable height to grow in.  It is painted with flat white paint.

My lights for flowering are 6, 42 Watt 2700 K CFLs.  I'm using a 6 socket bathroom lighting fixture that I fitted with a 6 ft cord and attached to a shelf that came with the box.  I would like to add some t5 bulbs this grow.  I know that Home depot now carries them in 2 and 3 ft lengths in either single or double bulb set ups.  The lights run off a digital timer.
The fan is a 4 inch inline fan that sits on top of a homemade carbon filter.  It is connected to a speed control and is set to the lowest setting.  4 inch ducting connects the fan to the closet door and air is released thru the door and into the room.  The door will have to be replaced.
There is an air intake hole on the bottom right of the cab.  It is connected to about 2 feet of 4 inch ducting that runs around to the front of the cab at floor level.  There is another 2 foot section of ducting located inside the cab.  It runs from the top left side of the lighting set up to the fan.

Here are my tools.

Day 15

Much happier plants.  You can see the damage on the older leaves but the new growth is looking good.
3 got watered 6.6 pH distilled water today.
They are about a week away from transplanting and moving to there new home

Day 18

So I transplanted these bad boys last night.  They are in there new cab in 8 inch pots.  FFOF was used again and they were watered with 6.3 pH distilled water.
Temps in the new cab are 75 - 80.

They again look a little sad.
In the 2nd pic you can see on the new growth an extremely twisted leaf
In the 3rd pic you can see where my cat ate some of the fan leaves.  Also there is a single leaf on the new growth that is much darker than the rest of the plant and shriveled.

Day 20

The plants are coming along.  The bag of FFOF used for transplanting was a bit on the hot side come to find out.  They don't seem to be showing any further dangerous effects from the hot soil. With each day they look a bit better.  They will receive Distilled water the next 2 waterings to be safe and then I will feed with grow big, half strength or less, once before I force them to flower.

Day 22

All 8 potential ladies received 6.8 pH distilled water yesterday and are looking much better.  They are all a very dark green and the new growth is still a little raised, but the leaves are much more erect.  I measured the run off on half the plants.  The lowest was 5.6 and the highest was 5.9.
I plan on watering next with the same 6.8 pH water.  Does anyone think I should go a bit higher?
The last pic in the series is a close up of Pic 3.  What ever this is, stared on the 2nd set of true leaves.  It is now showing on the first set of small leaves growing from the branch associated with the before mentioned 2nd set of true leaves.
Any Ideas?

Day 25

So They all look well and are adjusting to their new home except #7.  #7 is still showing signs of the hot soil. I will mini flush it on the next watering, which should be today or tomorrow.  #8 is starting to show pre-flowers and it looks male.  I will get pics up when it can be viewed by the naked eye.

So when I transplanted them I put them in pots #1-8.  I put what I thought was by best chance at a female in 1 and what I thought was my best chance at a male in #8 and so on.  I was right about #8.  If #1 presexes female, then I might pull her and mother her.  #1 is very compact with short stems.  It looks great, minus the chunks my cat took a week or more back.

The plants were getting as close as 3 to 4 inches away from the light.  I raised it 2.5 inches.  I added 52 more watts today.  A friend gave me a 2 ft T5HO and I added another free hanging CFL with bowl reflector.  It has a 27 watt bulb currently.  Both bulbs are 5000 K.  Temps are running 75(night) - 81(day) degrees with lights 6 inches away.

The Northern lights plant is much shorter than what I'm use to.  I'm curious to see how much it stretches during flowering.  I want to flower at 1 foot.

Day 26

#6 also showing suspected male preflowers
Watered #6, 7, and 8 yesterday with 6.8 pH
#1-5 today 6.9 pH
run offs measured 6-6.3
#7's run off measured 5.6
It was looking more plastic green in color, drooping, and just not growing, so I flushed with 1 gallon of 6.9 pH.

After watering, a few of the other plants took a step back.  Looks like they are not ready to eat yet.  I will probably have to water again before feeding them.  I have found using FFOF that it is so nutritious that I don't really get to use much grow big.

How can you tell (or at least try to guess) if it is a male or a female this soon?

When you flower. Try and double the wattage you got going now.. Less hours more lamps.. I take my babies from 660w-veg and put them in flowing with 2k... This run I have cause its winter and they need the extra heat. but you get the idea.

this is a boy.

By the pre flowers forming where the leave stems meet the main stem. Males form little football shaped flowers.  Females look more like a rounded cone (to me, upside down snow cones, or a vase) and have two white hairs coming out.  I will put pics up of that as it happens and more male flower pics as they become easier to see.

I still say possible hermi, but those could very well grow some balls and then its a boy.  but for sure one or the other, anyways.  I do plan on trying to make some seeds on this grow.  My plans are to keep my best male and collect pollen.

I figured it could not hurt, the closet does not get a lot of fresh air.  Besides, the shrooms lived there first.

Day 30

Watered all plants today with pH 6.8 distilled

I trimmed down my two males.  Topped them and trimmed all fan leaves.  Only 4 small branches remain on each.  The idea is to give each fewer places to produce flowers so I don't miss some opening.  (I will be attempting to collect pollen)

I pruned lightly and started some training today on the remaining 6 plants.  I will get pics up after christmas.

Merry Christmas

Day 33

I fed them for the first time today.  Half strength FF Grow Big.  pH 6.5-6.6  The new growth was starting to turn a lighter shad of green.

The two topped males are starting to take off again.

I murdered #7 today.  It just would not stop looking like a "Fake Plastic Tree"

I need to get started on my Carbon Filter because they are very stinky already.  They are going to stank!

Day 34

#1-6 are pictured from left to right.  I also included another male preflower pic and a pic of my training. #6 is my male

For training, I am simply tying down the tops so the bottom branches can get more light.  I will continues this through stretching until the canopy is even or about even.  At that point I will let the main shoots continue their upward growth.

I tossed #8.  I did not need two males, so I kept the best one.

I got my Carbon filter built.  I will post it's results in a day or two.

I am going to start the flowering process in 3-4 days.

Day 35

Presexed #4 and #2 FEMALE!!!!!! :crazy2: In that order
#4 is showing long hairs and #2 has two hairs just starting to poke out

Presexed #1 male :frown:

I moved #1 back to the seed/veg chamber just to be sure it is a male before I kill it.

Day 38
DAY #2 OF FLOWERING

I went 12/12 2 days ago.  I have confirmed another female, #3!  :dancer:
I believe that #5 is going to be female as well.  I will start the flowering nutes on their next feeding.

Day 41
Flower 5

Bad news first.  about 30 min ago the top main stem of #4 broke clean off.  I WAS SO MAD!
Question?  Being 5 days into flowering, will this cause any probs???  Other than delaying this plant.

Good news is that all four remaining plants are showing female flowers!!!

Here are some pics.  The first is the broken stem.

Don't worry I did the exact same thing to one of my plants just as they started to flower, and while its not a good thing to do, its not gonna harm it too much. Growth will be stunted for a little bit but you'll just get 2 main tops from that plant

Day 43
Flower 7

Well week one of flowering has ended and not much to see or talk about.  Just preflowers at this stage and not that many.  Hope week two is more exciting.  The damn plants are going to give me a heart attack...

Good news.  My fem AK 48 Nirvana seeds came in and they all look healthy!

Pics to come later when there are some flowers to see

Day 46
Flower 10

my best attempt at a panoramic view

Plant order
#3, 4, 5, 2

Right now the plants are having some pH issues I'm trying to fix.  Here is a link to the Doctor's Diagnosis post.  Help is welcome.  The plants are slowly getting worse.

The new growth is yellow/white, very thin, twisted, and growth is stunted.  leaf tips are yellow in spots and on older growth burnt in a few.  I believe, based on pH of runoff,  that the soil has a pH in the low to mid 5's.  I flushed #3 yesterday to try and raise the pH.

I Planted these 3 Mexican Brick bagseed 2.5 weeks back.  I'm going to practice cloneing with them.  I plan on picking a mother out of my 5 fem AK 48 seeds, so I need to learn how to clone.  I will start a separate thread for this when it goes down.  They are just starting to show signs of pre flowers now.  I may grow them instead of the AK if my current grow produces enough to last through the longer flowering period.  The last bag seed I grew was awesome!!!  It just took forever to flower.

No, but I figured that was something you mixed in your soil pre potting.

I have used during grow. Not sure how much to use exactly. Sure someone has a ratio for it or something but I just put some on top of soil and then watered using sprayer. I didnt measure ph just seen some problems and used lime, problems diminished. Hope it helps

That sucks to hear, shame your not getting more replys with help or suggestions. If it is just the ph I would definately recommend dolomite lime. Just found this from net. Hope this helps. I have also read about adding baking soda for ph adjustment but dont have any experience with that.

Dolomite Lime has been a useful PH stabilizer for years, since it has a neutral PH of 7 when added to your soil it stabilizes your soil at PH 7.
If you're using soil, powdered dolomite lime will work well, plus it adds some beneficial minerals to the medium. It's kinda slow acting so it takes a few days to bring up the PH
For faster acting, you can try hydrated lime, but be careful with that stuff. It can raise the PH fast and could possibly damage your plants if over used.

Best plan is to mix fine dolomite lime into your mix before planting. Fine Dolomite will help stabilize your pH; however, if the ph becomes unstable or changes, you can then use Hydrated Dolomite Lime. Add some of the hydrated lime to luke warm water and give it a good stir then water your plants with it. Give the plants a good watering with this hydrated lime added and your PH should fall or rise back to 7

Other Benefits of Dolomite Lime

Dolomite lime is also high in two secondary nutes that can often be overlooked by fertilizers; dolomite is high in both (Mg) Magnesium and (Ca) Calcium.

#5
Run off test - Distilled pH 7.0 in, and 4.6 out ????
after 1/3 strength Tigerbloom pH @ 7.7, a bit higher than #4

Run off 5.9

I have no idea how the pH got so low???
Hopefully these two plant's pH will stay high.

Tomorrow the other two will get food in the same manner.

#4 and #5 are stable.
Today is #2 and #3's turn to get fed and pH uped.

First #2
Initial runoff with pH 7 distilled water was pH 5.9

I fed 1 tsp of tigerbloom and added 1.1 tsp's of pH up for 6.9 pH

Run off after feeding pH was 6.1  Not a lot higher...

#3
Initial runoff 5.8

I added a few more drop of pH up so new pH is 7.0

after feeding pH is 6.2

well, let's see how they look in 3-4 days when the need a drink.  Fingers crossed!

i hear ya with the ph ,im going through a flux myself, last night i ran some tests with a homemade medium i maid ,i found that a mix of 50\50 cow manure ,mushroom comp, with peat moss at a ratio of 4 cups peat to 3 cup compost mixed with solution at 6.5 stabilized the medium at 6.3,so i got some cuttings in that to see how it performs ,oh and theres about %20 perlite in that to and im running that side by side with pro mix bx to see what performs!

Day 59
Flower 22

At day one of week 4 of flowering.  The plants are starting to so deficiencies at the bottom or possibly salt build up.  Definitely some N deficiencies.  Most of the leaf tips at bottom and in middle have brown tips.  Some of the upper middle have brown tips.  The newest growth is fine, but has yellow tips.

Next I have collected pollen. (Sorry, no pics of the male and its flowers)
It is currently in folded foil in a zip lock in the freezer.  I have read that you should apply it to you female at 3.5 weeks. Any ideas?

#2 and #4 got watered yesterday.  7.0 pH distilled
#5 was watered today with the same.
#3 most likely tomorrow.

Day 62
Flower 25

So I painted today...  :electrickoolaid:

I coned off the 3 shortest top branches on my best female #3.
I used a dark brown tipped water color brush and painted on pollen.
I collected the pollen from a separated male 2 days ago and stored the pollen in the freezer wrapped in a tin foil envelope.
I returned the #3 to the flowering chamber.

Thanks!  I'm still having a ridiculously hard time with the pH of the soil.  All of the plants are showing deficiencies because of the low pH I believe.  The worst has got necrotic spots on most of the fan leaves, all except the top two pair on each stem.  I'm going to add some crushed oyster shells to the top 2 inches of soil and give them a good watering when it is time.  I hope this will help stabilize it.

During this whole grow, I had a very hard time reading the ladies.

Hey man are you using ph up and down to adjust your ph when you give them nutes? Cause I've been reading that fox farm's tiger bloom lowers your ph drastically. It seems like you're doing everything right so you shouldn't be having such an issue with your ph. I have no experience whatsoever though so idk. Only the educational research I've done on this. Just my two cents

I never use pH down.  Never have to, the pH of my distilled is usually 6.7-7.  The Tiger bloom does drop the pH a ton, and it takes slightly more than equal amounts of pH up to correct back to the 6.5-6.9 range.  I wonder and worry, that what I think are high amounts of pH up, is causing salt build up in my soil.  I think this may be the cause of  nute lockouts.
Then again, I may just be underfeeding as well, but I'm too scared to feed more.  The bottle of Tiger bloom says a regular feeding is 2-3 tsp's every other watering.  I have never really gone above the 2 tsp mark.  Some times I wonder if I should do 3, but I'm too scared I will hurt my babies, so I play it safe.

Or both

The pots are only a gallon and a half at best and the plant's roots are most likely starting to get crowded.

I've been experimenting with PH Down and Up lately.  I just made my first bubble cloner and the PH has been all over the place lately.  It was at a 9 originally, and got moved down to a 7 and went all the way down to a 4 after I put some PH down in it.  I think I may have put too much, and just put a couple more drops in this morning to even it out.  Hopefully it'll turn out well, I'm only growing tomatoes at the time though.

So, I woke up to the electricity being off due to rolling black outs.  FUCKING CITY!

I assume that at this point all is lost?

a day short of five weeks into flowering.

Any advise would be great.

The city implemented the rolling black outs because of "cold weather".  The low was 19.  It did not rain, sleet, or snow.  Nothing but cold temps, and you would think that it was fucking Armageddon.  I have never been so annoyed with people, listening to them cry about the dangerous weather...
What fucking danger?
The shitty news is, It's going to be "cold" for the next two days.  Are they going to have rolling black outs for the next 2 days as well?

Also.  There was a very large # of car wrecks today because of the cities brilliant Idea to have rolling black outs during morning rush hour traffic.

Day 72
Flower 34

I have been advised to keep going so I will.

End of week 5 flowering

They were all fed yesterday or today with 2.5 tsp of Tiger Bloom per gallon at pH 6.6

So in looking for Herms this far into flowering do to light stress, where does one look.  The flowers are so dense that it seems like a hard task.

how much "stress" actually occurred? were the lights off for like 24/48 hours or was it like a couple of extra hours off? i think one day of fluctuations probably isn't enough to herm the plants - consider it a cloudy day...

My lights come on everyday at 9 pm and go off at 9 am.
At 5:30 am on Tuesday the electricity went off, and it came back on 45 mins later, 6:15.  It went off again at 6:20 and came back 45 mins later at 7:05.  The city claims this was the time table.  I woke up at 7:05 - 7:10ish and it was off.  It came on about 30 to 45 mins later and again turned off.
At this point I unplugged it and let the long night cycle begin about 1 hour early.

So It could have gone off that many times, and it could do the same again today.

I put a bright LED flashlight/lantern in the cab and will turn it on at 5:30 just in case.  It may do some good.

Day 73
Flower 35

5 weeks complete, begin week 6!  3-4 weeks to go.

So I want to start thinking about when I should flush them?

I was thinking one more feeding and then flush the very next watering which would be water, feed, flush, water, water...  So end of week six they would get there last feeding and 4-5 days later, about end of week 7 I would flush them.  Gives them 1.5-2 weeks of just water.

How does that sound?

They don't need two full weeks for the flush.  Stick with a week or so.

Day 80

End of week 6

#5

#2
Pic1  Top
Pic2  Main cola

Ok, so it is obvious that #2 is the runt of the group.  My question is why?

Do you think it's just a pheno issue?

This is the plant that sits next to my intake hole.
I have been wondering if the light from under my door is reflecting off the inside of my 4 inch aluminum ducting.  I don't think there is much light.
Also, I think this because on my last grow having a similar issue.  The plant that occupied the same spot next to the intake hole had funny slow growth.

At the same time, I do seem to put my slowest in that spot.
Last grow I chopped all four plants at the same time, even though 2 looked unfinished.  This time I'm prepared to chop each plant as they mature.

Enjoy the pics

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

First off, the light leak if it exist, should be an easy fix.

Second

MY GOD DAMN HEATER JUST BLEW UP and turned my electricity off for and hour and a half.

I say
:doublefu:
to the electricity Gods!
This is the second time in as many weeks.

Maintenance guys had to come and fix a bunch off shit.  I thought there was a fire at first because of the smell and sparks when it all went down.

So anyways another set back in the flowering.  I will trek on and see what happens.
2-3 weeks to go yea...  :bomb:

This is one of my pollenated buds.
See bottom of the 2 flowers (swollen calyx) facing you.
At first I thought it was a male flower, and now I think it's just a seed pod.
It looks completely different from the top one.

Also, the 2 hairs below it are not coming from it.  It looks like it has no stigma.

Your thought?

At a closer look, the pod is very hard (like the meat of an acorn) and it appears to be a seed that lost its outer covering.

yeah that's the plan, It's just a matter of finding them.

So I started counting my flowering period from when I flipped to 12/12.  I have been reading that others start counting when the flowers start to cluster, and that this is how breeders base their advertised flowering periods.

I can already see that my plants will not all finish at the same time but I'm just trying to gage when to flush them.  I don't want to flush too soon.

Any ideas?

i was planning on a single week of flush for my girls when the time comes, which have been grown organically in soil (FFOF/Happy Frog), i believe that's sufficient

Day 87
Flower 48
end of week 7

PICS!

Well, all but one of the plants has some toxic salt build up.  Also, the plants have a slight mildew like smell to them, but I don't see any signs of mildew?  Then again, I've never had to deal with mildew before...  When I rub up against them they smell great.  due to the salt build up and it being the end of week 7, I'm going to flush them all this week.  They might take a bit longer than one week to finish, but I'm fine with that.

I hope in no more than 2 weeks.  Pistils are starting to turn rapidly on 2 of the ladies, and the flowers are starting to swell.  I'm going to start looking her over for trich color, in the next few days.  I'm about to start my AK-48 fem seeds, so I will need the space in 3 weeks.

I'm not sure.  This is my first time growing it, but it won't be my last!

Saturday will be flush day.  It is the only day in the near future where I will have a stretch of time long enough to get them all done.  I'm not sure how many gallons my 8 inch pots are, but I figure 5 gallons per a pot should be enough.

Not quite enough zoom for a look at the glandular heads of the trichomes, but I think that she needs more time before the harvest.

I'm thinking 1-2 weeks and leaning more towards 2 weeks.
I can't get any closer on the pics.

Day 94
Flower 55

#5 is a week or so behind #3 and #4
#2 is a bit behind, but also suffers from light leak stress or bad genetics.    We will see how the smoke turns out.
#4 has what are either very yellow small leaves, or about 5-10 single male flowers.  I hope its just yellowing from the flush.

I'm guessing a week or less for #3 and #4
maybe 2 weeks or less for the other 2

Waiting is so hard... and yes, I love chewing on a nug!

My 5 AK 48 seeds are 1 day in the ground.  They soaked for 12 hours in distilled water and then put them in solo cups with 60% FFOF and %40 added perlite.  They were put in 12 more hours of darkness and have been under 24hrs of light (2 27 watt cfl's).  Nothing has popped up yet.

Have you had a lot of yellowing happen to the lower leaves?

On one of the plants yes, but on the other 3 it has been minimal.

Thanks, so am I!  I hope to get at least an ounce per plant from my 3 strong ladies.  I plan on using #2 for hash, green dragon, or budder.

So I have learned a few things this grow.

1.  Don't forget to cut the FFOF soil with perlite.
I forgot to add any extra perlite when I did my transplant from solo cups to 8 inch pots.  the result was plants that did not drain as well as I would have liked, and compact soil.

2.  8 inch pots are not big enough for me
I estimate my pots volume to be 1 to 1 1/2 gallons.  I have purchased three 10 inch pots for my next grow which will be a SCROG grow.

3.  Flush at least twice
Only flushing at the end of the grow seemed to hurt my yields.  The ladies suffered from some toxic salt build up for most of flowering.  Also, 1 and 2 helped contribute to the build up of salts as well.

4.  When the time comes, don't be afraid to feed them.
I always see what everyone else feeds their plants and I don't seem to come near it.  I seem to always play it safe.  I should trust the manufactures label.

yo man i was seeing some of those tiny yellow spots on my plants too over the last week or so, but i'm pretty much certain they aren't pollen sacs

i got a good look at a sample nug which had a couple of these tiny bleached parts - didn't look like anything to worry about

Day 101
Flower 62
End of week 9

#3
Here is my best plant.  Also the planed that I pollinated the bud sites.
She will be chopped on Saturday morning.

#4
Was my second best plant now I would say my 3rd.  It was accedintaly topped about a week into flowering.  The flowering stalled on this one.  I think I flushed it to early.
She will be chopped on Saturday morning.

#5
My 2nd best lady, might end up being my best.  My smallest lady.  I feed her a full strength dose 3 days ago because she is at least 1-2 weeks behind the previous 2.
Chop date to be determined.

#2
My "runt"  She is lagging behind the first 2.  She will be used to make edibles.
Chop date to be determined

Thanks peeps.  they were chopped about 18 hours ago.  I decided to go ahead and chop all 4 at the same time.  I did not have anywhere to hang 2 up.  Here are the pics of my best 3.  I forgot to get a pic of my runt.

The smell from these ladies was so intense.  I will post a final weight and smoke report within the week.

Got .75 grams of hash from my good trim.  I scraped it for a good 15 mins with a credit card over a silk screen.

I am now using the material to make ISO hash.  It is drying over night.

One more grow with the CFL's, SCROG  AK-48

SO the Weights are in.

Best plant #3    23g
next #5            19g
next #4            17g
runt #2              11g

That's 59 smokable grams and 11 grams for edibles.
I was hopeing for a better result than last time, but with the lights going out twice during late flowering, I'm not surprised.  I pleased to have good smoke again and I've learned a bunch! Enjoy.

Smoke report. :bonghit:  I'm smoking a bud off of #4
Just took my first hit when I started typing this.  10 minuets later and I'm finding it much harder to type.  I can feel my body getting numb.
:bonghit:
The taste is somewhat fuel like with a light sweet after taste.  I expect this to get better as it cures.
:bonghit:
The smell is like Christmas Morning!

Ok now I'm just stupid High!
